MEMORANDUM

From'
Project:
Subject:
Date:

Brian Olson
Erik Jansson
Ramsey Municipal Parking Ramp
Stone RFP
October 4, 2005

Notes from Facilities Committee Meetinq on Thursday, September 29th at 2pm.
Below is a summary of the discussion regarding RFP 001, Item #2 - Kasota Stone vs.
Precast Formliner. The notes represent general viewpoints as well as specific
comments made during the discussion.

Comments supporting Kasota Stone:
1. In directly comparing the materials, most members of the committee preferred
the look of the stone.
2, The addition of the same Kasota stone used on the Municipal center would help
tie in the two buildings visually. They are not exactly the same - the Parking
Facility has a rough cut, while the Municipal Building has a smooth finish - but
they will be more similar than stone and precast formliner.
3. The addition of stone raises the bar on design and material expectations for the
Ramsey Town Center.
4. Stone is an enhancement to the main pedeStrian walkways (east & south) around
the parking facility
5. The long term appearance is better with stone, precast will fade over time
6. Since stone has more color variation, it will be a slightly easier to match with
future phases
7. Stone may be easier to replace if damaged

Comments supporting Precast Formliner:
1. The average person will not know the difference between stone or precast
formliner.
2. Money to pay for this change - $114,000 -would have to come from an
additional source. There is not enough room in the contingency to pay for the
stone. Additionally, there are no other identified sources of funds available from
the bond proceeds or other city sources at this time (per Jim Lasher).
3. There is concern that the stone is not enough "bang for the buck." The stone is
not on a significant portion of the facility; it used as an accent on the base of the
precast columns, primarily on the east'and south sides.
4. The rational for adding real stone on Parking Facility is not the same as the
Municipal Center. There is much more stone on the Municipal Center, and that

~-'~'~":= ....
