Mayor (iamcc asked if there are any problems relating to Fire Code on these units.

Public Works Director Kapler replied the units should be required to be UL listed. He indicated
there is at least one of these units in town and there have been a handful of complaints about
smoke migrating to neighbors. He would like to research the distance required by other cities.

( ouncilmember Elvig noted the height of the stack could have an effect on the effects of the unit
m; xvcll.

Dupont~ 154m Lane NW, stated he is interested in having one of these wood burning stoves. Gas
prices arc high and people are trying to determine alternative means to heat their homes. He
would like to have an idea on what this ordinance would cover. He commented if a home is
located in the middle of one acre you would be hard pressed to get 75 feet in either direction for
the placement of the unit. The recommended safety margin is 50 feet. He stated the Council
should keep in mind that people are trying to save money the best they can.

Mayor Gamec explained in general the Council would likely agree to these units in certain areas,
but not likely in urban residential areas. This is new to Ramsey and staff will be providing the
('ouncil with additional information.

Motion by Councihnember Cook, seconded by Councilmember Elvig, to introduce the proposed
ordinance to amend City Code Section 9.11 (Performance Standards) to establish regulations for
e×lcrior solid fuel-fired heating devices.

Motion carried.
