} tit <br />ADMINISTRATION <br />October 4, 2022 <br />Contact: Erik Thorson, Communications Director, 763-324-4612, or e-mail: <br />Erik.Thorson(i)co.anoka.mn.us <br />FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE <br />STRESS MANAGEMENT TRAINING BUILDS RESILIENCY <br />Oromo community member tells Council there's interest in pursuing more <br />Mental health is a taboo subject in some cultures, Fahmi Katabay told members of the <br />Anoka County Children and Family Council at their September meeting held at the Anoka County <br />Sheriff's Office in Andover. <br />"Address it. Face it. Be honest about it," said Katabay, a member of the local Oromo <br />community made up of immigrants from eastern Africa. "Let's think in a global sense and solve <br />problems together. I wish we would all get involved in helping each other cope with stress." <br />A group of Oromo youth received training on managing stress in June, thanks to organizing <br />by the Anoka County Children and Family Council (ACCFC) and Oromo leaders, who partnered <br />with Allina's (,".1L 1,1e to Chill program. Funding from the Minnesota Department of Human <br />Services covered costs. <br />Katabay shared a video that included testimonials from young people at the training who <br />said they learned new ways to manage stress. <br />"Stress can be a good and a bad thing," one girl said. <br />Participants in the training, held at the Oromo Resource Center in Fridley, received calm <br />kits designed to help youth regulate their stress levels using tools like stress balls and fidget <br />spinners.
