Mayor (;amec asked if there are any problems relating to Fire Code on these units.

Public Works Director Kapler replied the units should be required to be UL listed. He indicated
there is at least one of these units in town and there have been a handful of complaints about
smoke migrating to neighbors. He would like to research the distance required by other cities.

Councilmember Elvig noted the height of the stack could have an effect on the effects of the unit
well.

[)upont. 154m Lane NW, stated he is interested in having one of these wood burning stoves. Gas
prices are high and people are trying to determine alternative means to heat their homes. He
would like to have an idea on what this ordinance would cover. He commented if a home is
located in the middle of one acre you would be hard pressed to get 75 feet in either direction for
the placement of the unit. The recommended safety margin is 50 feet. He stated the Council
sl~ould keep in mind that people are trying to save money the best they can.

iVlayor (iamec explained in general the Council would likely agree to these units in certain areas,
but not likely in urban residential areas. This is new to Ramsey and staff will be providing the
Council with additional information.

Motion by Councilmember Cook, seconded by Councilmember Elvig, to introduce the proposed
o~'dinance to amend City Code Section 9.11 (Performance Standards) to establish regulations for
c×terior solid fuel-fired heating devices.

~lotion carried.
