44

Motion carried. Voting Yes: Mayor Gain.cc and Councilmembers Kurak, Hendriksen, Anderson,
and Zimmerman. Vo[ingNo: None.

Case #2: Update on Public Works .Campus

Principal City Engineer Otson stated that over the past few months,- sfaff and Council haze
discussed the Public Works facility located near the intersection of JasPar Street and 142nd
Avenue NW. On July 23, 2002, Council introduced an ordinance that would vacate a section of
142nd Avenue NW between the north and south PubIic Works sites. This ordinance was adopted
on August 13, 2002. One of the questions that arose from that vacation process was the
possibility of creating a cul-de-sac for vehicles that enter the new dead end street. Staff has
looked at tim two locations that are possible for this cul-de-sac and are recommending.that the
cul-de-sac be located at the intersection of 142nd Avenue NW and Limonite Street. There are not
any local accesses on 142no Street NW east of Limonite Street NW..an4:currently no need to plow
that section ors treet, T he purpose of the case is to updateyou on the project and acquire a
consensus to the location of the cul-de-sac, The construction season is coming to a close and staff
anticipates that upon the vacation ordinance becoming effective (30 days after adoption) that
staff will begin the grading work necessary to facilitate the screening and ponding along the west
side of the property. This will all be done with City personnel and not .result in significant
expenditures of public moneys.

Mayor Gamec inquired if the berrning would start this fall.

Director of Public Works/Fire Chief Kapler replied that staff has already begun building the
berm.

Mayor Gamec stated that he agreed with adding the berm to help the appearance with the area.

Principal City Engineer Olson stated that the City has an opportunity to utilize excess dirt from
~he Sunwood drive project for the berm. He also noted that staffhas a tentative agreement to get
the dirt hauled over to the facility at no cost.

Councilmember Kurak inquired if the property would be le~ in good shape when the dirt is'
removed.

Principal City Engineer Olson replied yes.

Councilmember Zimmerman stated that the City has an opp0rmnity to get some of the lot from
Alloy Recovery property and he did not think that the City could find land for that same cost.

Councilmember Hendriksen requested clarification ~f the City currently owned the Alloy
Recovery property or could the City possibly acquire the land.

Councilmember Zimmerman replied that he would like the property to'be used for Public Works
purposes. He also noted that he did not have a problem with the cul-de-sac.

Public Works Committee/August 19, 2002
