There is general agreement that manure spreading on <br />fields is environmentally sound, except that on some days the odor is <br />offensive. There never is a danger to health. <br /> <br /> Some improvement could be made in locating the manure storage area, and <br /> structures which would diminish smells and of course improve the ease <br />· of hJndling and the efficiency of pork production. <br /> <br /> Then some attention and minor construction will 'be needed to get the now <br /> very small quantity of effluent into the creek without eroding the banks. <br /> <br /> Whether these measures will satisfy city officials answering to complaints <br /> depends entirely on whether the city develops some quantitative criteria <br /> and follows some kind of due process in enforcing those regulations. <br /> They probably don't feel the need to do this as long as public opinion <br /> is being formed by the new folks settling in and the building industry <br /> that brought them there. <br /> <br /> I doubt that you could recover ~rom farm'profits the legal fees it will <br /> cost you to win in a direct legal battle. <br /> <br />Of course, if Malamens, Dills, and Jelmelands ever decide to sell their <br />land to the building industry, you will no longer have the acres needed <br />to support your livestock. Perhaps there is not a probability of those <br />owners selling their whole acreage. If the whole acreage is zoned housing, <br />sales of the lands must now either go to a speculator or to the building <br />~industry.- It wduld be hard t6 document a proposition that this would <br />happen in less than 20years given the current energy, inflation, and market <br />conditions. These negative factors seem to me greater than the obvious <br />advantages of the land with it creeks and .good roads. <br /> <br /> The role of the Anoka County Extension Service is as an educator..In your <br /> case there are several issues. 1) the role of housing in a food production <br /> area; and 2) the technologies in engineering and animal husbandry necessary <br /> to make your operation successful. <br /> <br />If you have any questions or want technical assistance, call and I will <br />arrange for the appropriate specialist as soon as possible.
