ESTED CITIZENS <br />The 1980 State Waste Management Act requires the HetropolItan Council to <br />prepare and submit a solid ~ste "abatement" report to the sevem <br />metropolitan counties by January 1981. The purpose-o~ the report iS tO <br />provide a planning framework the co%mtfes cam use in developing altsraattves <br />for reducing the future need for sanitar~ lamdf~lls- <br /> A first draft of the report was prepared i~ September, and m~s discussed <br /> at a series of meetings ~ld around the T~ CIt~es Area-in October. The <br /> attached doc~ent is a second draft of the report, entitled I.an~ <br /> Disposal Abatement: Final Report. <br /> The Metropolitan Council will hold a special meeting Dec. 4 %o b~ar public <br /> comments on the doc''meet- Th~public meeting w~_ll be held at 7 p.m. in <br /> the Metropolitam Councful offices, 300 Metro Square ~ldg., 7th and Robert Sts., <br /> St. Paul. ~ou are cordially invited to attend and offer your c~ents. <br /> The report contains goals and recommendations to guide abatement efforts <br /> of both private industr~; and government. It describes different kinds <br /> of abatement strategies, discusses potential methods of financing abatement <br /> programs, potemtial program costs and possible economo ~ncentives that could <br /> encourage participation of private Industr~ in abatement progr~m' Another <br /> feature of the report is a reco~ended schedule for implementing waste <br /> reduction, recycling, waste processing and resource recovery programs. <br /> After the Dec. 4 public meeting, the report will undergo further revision. <br /> Adoption of the report by the Metropolitan Council is expected Dec. 18. <br /> If you would like additional copies of the attached report, please call <br /> the Council's Public Information Office at 291-6464.
