He said the smell was noticeable a block away from
the landfill and it was the strongest he had ever seen out there. He said
there was a trench 6' deep and 5' wide and the open-part ran for 100 yards.
He said he went there at approximately 6:30 p.m. He said he discussed the
matter with the Hatch'~s and the next morning,' he contacted Commissioner Fields
and told him it was his job to see that the situation was resolved. Commissioner Fields
got back to him an hour later and set it would be taken care of that night. The
next morning it was pretty well alleviated. They filled it in and covered it
with plaStic.
Councilman Cox said those people were advised not to let this happen again.
Mayor Gamec said he told Commissioner Fields that this particular problem
is one that should never have happened and it was neglect. The County
Public Health Depa~ment should have made sure that smell didn't happen
and there are several things they could have done to prevent it.
A Ramsey resident said they have eight holes standing open at the landfill.
Mayor Camec said they put plastic there to alleviate water going down and
odor coming up.
C/October 28, 1980
Page 9
