Mayor Gamec commented that the City Council may be interested in knowing the amount of
training the reserves have to do - and what duties they perform for and with the Department.

Chairperson Anderson commented on how good it is to have reserves and how much money they
actually save the City.

Councilmember Pearson inquired about insurance for the reserves.

Fire Chief Kapler responded that the insurance for the reserves is handled in pretty much the
same way as it is for volunteer Fire Fighters.

Discussion ensued relating to reserves, their training, patrol ride-a-longs, fingerprinting
programs, and car seat programs.

2) Chair/Vice Chair Elections

Chairperson Anderson suggested the Board elect a Chair and Vice-Chair for the 2006 year.

Motion by Mayor Gamec and seconded by Police Rep Boardmember Paplham to nominate/elect
Tom Anderson as Chairperson.

Motion carried - all in favor.

Motion by Councilmember Pearson and seconded by Police Rep Boardmember Paplham to
nominate/elect David Lewandowski as Vice-Chairperson.

Motion carried - all in favor.

3) Fire Department Update

1) A part-time secretary for the Fire Department was hired in 2005.
2) The City Council approved promoting the secretary to full time for 2006.
3) The Fire Department is currently full-staffed at 40 people.

Chairperson Anderson inquired about the number of daytime firefighters.

Chief Kapler stated there are probably 10 to 14 people who can respond to a daytime fire.

4)

5)
6)

7)

Chief Kapler explained that the auto aid package has been altered and explained how
it now works.
The Department finished a full year of duty officer program.
With smoke detector calls (malfunction) - the entire department is no longer
dispatched out - one officer goes and that's working well.
2005 was the first full year of covering one/half of Burns Township.

Public Safety Board -January 12, 2006
