8) Chief Kapler talked about the investigative team and training - Fit Team - Jerry <br /> Streich heads that group. They will put out an annual report and ChiefKapler offered <br /> that the Public Safety Board would be given this report. <br />9) There was a case of playground arson as well as several attempts of arson at a <br /> residence. Both cases have been solved. <br /> 10) Chief Kapler explained that the Fit Team is Fire Departments in the County - and the <br /> County Attorney works with this group. <br /> <br />4) Public Works Update <br /> <br />1) <br /> <br />2) <br /> <br />3) <br /> <br />September storm - the Public Works staff had the roads open by midnight. There <br />was one big communication coverage hole - we all rely on Nextels and that night <br />Nextels were saturated. For 2007, he has requested a bank of radios. <br />The Public Works Department was very aggressive with intersections - trying to keep <br />them clear of obstruction. The intersections are up to 90% compliant now. <br />Efforts have been expanded on walk and trail maintenance - keeping people off the <br />roads and on the trails. A sidewalk maintenance machine will be purchased for 2006. <br /> <br />Mayor Gamec noted that Chief Kapler had mentioned putting the purchase of radios in the 2007 <br />budget. He inquired what the cost of the radios would be. <br /> <br />Chief Kapler estimated the cost to be about $2,400 to $2,600. He added he is requesting six <br />radios. <br /> <br />Mayor Gamec suggested purchasing the radios earlier than 2007. <br /> <br />Discussion ensued relating to some funding ideas for the radios. <br /> <br />5) Communication Tower <br /> <br />Police Chief Way reported that about three to four weeks ago, John Tonding, Head of Anoka <br />County Communications contacted him (Way) and Chief Kapler about a few radio issues with <br />regard to coverage in Ramsey - and also Coon Rapids. There is a communications tower on top <br />of the Court House that covers Ramsey, Anoka and Coon Rapids. Mr. Tonding talked about <br />dismantling the tower on the Court House and putting it in Coon Rapids - Bunker Hills Park - <br />and putting up a 180' tower in the City of Ramsey. The ideal location is where the current Police <br />building is. The property is an 80 x 80 piece of property at the comer of Alpine Drive and #47. <br />A section of this property may be the eventual site for Fire Station 2. The cost of the tower if <br />$1.2 million, and they are only looking to Ramsey for the land to put it on - them am no other <br />costs to our City. This will allow for increased communication coverage. Chief Way added that <br />the City may even be able to rent some space off that tower. <br /> <br />Chief Kapler stated that some may wonder why Ramsey - Ramsey has been labeled one of the <br />fastest growing areas in the Metro and there is a priority for better coverage. <br /> <br />Public Safety Board - January 12, 2006 <br /> Page 4 of 8 <br /> <br /> <br />
