CASE # 3
Environmental Expo 2006
By: Chris Anderson, Zoning & Recycling Coordinator
Background:
As part of the 2005 work plan, the EPB participated in the 2005 Environmental Expo by staffing
a booth and presenting information on the City's wetlands. The 2006 Environmental Expo has
been tentatively scheduled for Saturday, April 29. The location of the Expo will again be at the
Ramsey elementary school. Each year, the EPB (and previously the EPTF) staff's one of the
booths at the Expo geared toward providing environmental education to residents.
Recommendation:
Staff would recommend that the EPB begin considering which topic(s) they will address at their
booth this year. It may be appropriate to formulate a subcommittee to brainstorm and report back
to the Board in February.
EPB Action
Based on discussion.
EPB: 1/9/06
Exhibits
Canopy Cover Formula
1. Determine the square footage of the entire site
2. Determine the square footage of the impervious area
3. Determine the square footage of the pervious area
4. Determine the ratio between impervious area to entire site
(R = impervious area/entire site)
5. Multiply the ratio (R) by the square footage of the pervious area to calculate the required
canopy cover square footage
Crown Cover (Canopy Cover) for a species is determined by the following formula:
(((min. + max spread) / 4)2) * TC (pi) * (0.65 for preferred or 0.5 for acceptable species)
The formula determines the average spread of a species and then divides it by 2 to get the radius
(these steps are combined and that is why it shows as divided by 4). Then, the area of a circle
(the canopy cover) is calculated, which is pi * r2. This is then multiplied by a designated factor
