REPORT ON THURS. JAN. 29th COUNTY SANITARY LANDFILL SITE SELECTION MEETING

The county is looking for 6 preliminary candidate sites for s~nitary landfill..
Henningson, Durham & Richardson, Eugene A. Hickok and Assoc. along with
Pope-Reid Assoc. have completed a study of the county. They took into
account, surface water, flood plains, groundwater, recreation, residential,
airports, industry, transportation, aqriculture, bedrock, surface aqudfers,
bedrock aquifers, habitat, soil texture, permeability, bedrock depth,
watershed, cultivation, forest cover, extraction, conflicts and slope.
They mapped these factors in limits from acceptable to exclusive and then
composited the maps to come up with feasible sites for landfills.
Burns Twp. and Columbia Heights were two of the best sites for a landfill.
Columbia Hgts. was excluded because of population and Burns Twp. was passed
over because of transportation and it's agricultural value.
The Advisory Council is going to give first consideration to sites tocat~d
one mile east of 65, three miles west of 65, north of 242. Some of the
sites located in this area could be eliminated because of residents, the
data they used for mapping residential areas was dated 1968.
There was one site possibility in Ramsey, the area is bordered by Dolphin,
169th, Llama and 173rd. Unfortunately this land is not even platted.
This area fell under the following catagories on individual study maps.

surficisl aquifers-- highly limited
soil texture--moderately limited
permeability--moderately limited
cultivation--moderately limited
conflicts--slightly limited
soil composition--slightly l~mlted.
As you can see, the problem seems to be that the entire county is bad
for landftlling, so it is a matter of discovering the least of the worst.
It is m~ feeling that the City of Rsm~ey should pay close attention to these
meetings and the eventm,~l outcome could have a big impact on ottr city.

Respectfully submitted,
Sue VanWagner
