CASE #10:

STATE AID LEGISLATION:
Background Information: As you noted, we got headlines in ~the
Mpls Sunday Tribune on our cause. Now, I'm trying to get TV
coverage on it and I think we shall succeed in this area. We
have contacted the St. Paul paper again and met with them, but
they seem a little reticent at this time to get involved with
this issue. I do think they will come around to ou~ side and
prepare an article for publication.
The interesting thing is Steve Brandt's article in the Mpls paper
gave the media people excellent knowledge of ou~ problem. When
I spike to Jim Gately of Channel iT, he had read the article and
w~s very interested in working with us. I also talked to Channel
2 and there they had read the article and was really interested
in it but finding a spot for it is a problem for them. Now, I .
will also be contacting Channel 4, 5, g 9 about getting coverage.
As to who would appear on these programs if we succeed, I will
ask Mayor Gamec, Mayor Kaasa, and Mayor Vetter to cover this. It
is a political issue and elected officials should address them.
The Anoka paper will be coming out with an article on this also
so we are beginning to be heard.
Council Action: Mayor Gamec will be asking Council to call a
Special Meeting of the surrounding communities here in Anoka
County to get their involvement in it. I guess the majOr quest-
ion here is the date for the special meeting.
I will have a proposed letter prepared for Council approval to
get Anoka County Board's involvement in this issue. The County
is very remiss in taking the attitude they have on this, which is
to ignore it.
We should also send a letter to the Mpls Sunday Tribune thanking
them for their fine coverage on this issue.
Council should also consider legal action on this case if the
legislative process fails. As I think we would have a good case
but we should first pursue the normal legislative process which we
are doing here. I think we shoold be fully prepared if at the
end of the session we fail in our mission, then be prepared to
file a suit against the State.
