Regarding emergency vehicles, several of the
demonstrationprojects in the Rail corridor Study, "Alternative Solutions to
Railroad Impacts on Communities", currently underWay in Minnesota, involve
emergency service provider/railroad communication systems and a volunteer
. .
rescue squad. A fire service and, railroad emergency.co~nun~ca~on syst
be established in Elk River and ambulance and railroad emergency cor~aun
systems' will be established' in Moorhead and Sauk Rapids. Also, a volunteer
rescue~quad will be es~mhlished in Sauk Rapids.
The purpose of the emergency communication systems is to circumventor
minimize emergency ve~icle delayat crossings. A compatible Communication
system will be established between the emergency serviceproviders (fire and
ambulance) and the railroad agent'or dispatchers so.that'train operationscan
possibly be changed (slowed ~own, speed up, or stopped) to avoid'blocking
· predesignated emergency'crossings- The purpose of the rescue squad will be to
provide first resPOnse capabil'ities at the emergency scene until the ambulance
service arrives. It will be located on the side of the main line opposite to
the ambulance service.

An Equal Opportunity Employer
