CHAPTER
PRESIDENT'S
REPORT

PRESIDENT'S TERM
My two-year term is fast drawing to a close. I will be officiating at your Full Day Seminar
this month, and then shortly thereafter Bill Tobin, currently vice president, will be run-
ning this great chapter. It has been a thrill to lead this organization this past two years
and to have put on the programs for two years before that. This four years of activity has
been very interesting - but, I am going to save the final words for the April newsletter...

THE NEW ADMINISTRATION
I have been attending Bill Tobin's meetings with his new committee chairpeople and am
greatly impressed. If you members thought we were good this past two years, you will
think we are terrific this coming year. This organization has many, many volunteers who
are eager to help our industry. The loyalty that has been generated among all of us is
really astounding. Our NAIOP chapter is becoming one of the leading trade organizations
in this area - we were successful in putting nearly all of the people who offered their
time to work on committees. We had some late volunteers whom we hope to satisfy, too.

BOB WILSON & DICK SCHNEIDER
~ll~ was very sorry to hear that Bob Wilson of Prudential
~as been transferred to Newark as a result of his recent
promotion (sorry for us...happy for him!) Bob was an
excellent board member and well represented Prudential's
continuous commitment to NAIOP. Our thanks go to Bob
for his dedication to our chapter. I have appointed Dick
Schneider of Northwestern National Bank to serve the re-
mainder of Bob's term. Dick, along with Northwestern
Bank, has been a good supporter of this organization over
the past years. He has spoken to our organization at three
seminars and has given us excellent predictions on the eco-
nomy.

PALM SPRINGS SEMINAR
Eleven of our local members and their wives attended the
financing seminar in Palm Springs last month. Again, a
first-class seminar put on by National NAIOP. In a nut
shell, the seminar told us that to build today you will

SAMUEL S. MARFIELD
NAIOP.Chapter. President , ·

have an institution as your 50%+ partner. I feel that the
institutions have no business being in the development
business, but as long as inflation continues at its current
pace, institutions have no choice but to be our partners.

OUR CHAPTER'S IMAGE
I was quite pleased to see the large turnout for our Febru-
ary seminar on city/developer relations. I believe we
were all surprised to learn how many of us are interested
in communicating our image to the various cities. NAIOP
is coming to be recognized as a quality spokesman for this
industry. We want to let the cities know that if an NAIOP
member wishes to build in their city, the probability is
high that the city will be getting a quality projectl When
NAIOP comes to town, the city will be getting a good
partner. Much will be done this coming year by our chapter
to further our quality image.
-- Samuel S. Marfield
NAIOP Chapter President

PROGI:IAM
COMMITTEE
NEWS

The Full Day Seminar to be held at the Radisson South
Hotel on Tuesday, March 24 marks the end of my term as
your Program Committee Chairman and the completion
of a job well done by committee members Bill Balsiger of
Northland Mortgage Company, Helen Brooks of the Towle
Company, John Gahrielsun of Coldwell Banker, and Court
Storey of United Properties. Their involvement and dedi-
cation has been the sole reason for our success in main-
taining the high quality of programs throughout the past
year and I would like to express my sincere appreciation
for their efforts.

Your new Program Chairman is to be Dave Weir of Cramer-Weir
Company and. knowing Dave as I do, there is no doubt that our
programs wgl continue to be the most well attended in town. We
wish him and his new committee all the best in their endeavors.

Many thanks to our February meeting moderator Helen Brooks Qf
the Towle Company and our speakers, Jim Stuebner of Northland
Development, Ken Yager0 Mayor of Minnetonka and Tom Hedge~,
City Administrator of Eagen for the excellent program that they put
on. It was extremely interesting to hear both points of view tn the
developer/municlpagty negotiation process.

Coming up in NAIOP we have the following events scheduled both
~ocally and nationally:
MARCH 24 Upper Midwest Full Day Seminar
"Changing Role of the Developer for the 1980's"
APRIL 18 National Mid-Year Conferenc~
White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia
AP RI L 21 Uppe~ Midwest Breakfast ~eminar
MAY 18 National O~flce Park Comprehensive Course
Minneapolis, Minnesota
MAY 26 Upper Midwest Breakfast Seminar

Finally, thank you all for your interest in our programs during the
past year. The program planning has been a challenging role but has
arso been rewarding when so many members support our efforts by
their atlendance. Thank you.
-- Steven E. Gage, Chairman
NAIOP Program Committee
