Jeff Piton asked the type of notice a firefighter typically provides to the organization.
Fire Chief Kohner stated that there is not a specific requirement and is typically based on the
situation of the firefighter. He stated that even full-time employees do not have a required notice
that they must provide. He stated that both parties know that they are separating and will be
working together throughout the process.
Mr. Ulrich stated that there is no termination clause in this agreement but commented that it
would be helpful for Ramsey to have a 60 day written notice to terminate the contract to ensure
that the pension funds could be transferred and the proper documentation could be in place for
staff that will be going with Nowthen.
Mr. Piton suggested using a term of 90 days or less.
Ms. Heinrich suggested using a term of 60 to 90 days for notice, as that would ensure that
Ramsey is provided a notice period of at least 60 days.
The group provided some additional grammatical changes.
Mr. Ulrich asked if the group feels that a final draft would be ready to go before the City Councils
or whether an additional Fire Board meeting would be desired.
Fire Chief Kohner noted that the changes discussed tonight could be distributed electronically
for review prior to review by the City Councils.
Mr. Piton stated that they could send the information related to the legislation to their City
Attorney and if they gain his blessing, they would be comfortable moving it forward for review by
the City Councils. He noted that if there are any questions, they can call Fire Chief Kohner to
schedule an additional meeting.
Update on Timeline of Fire Service Model in Nowthen
Mr. Piton stated that there has been some confusion that they need to clear up with St. Francis
in order to provide a better outlook on the timeline. He stated that because of the personnel
they need to hire and train and the equipment necessary, he would anticipate a six-month
process.
Mr. Breyen commented that the Fire ID has been applied for and once approved that will be one
of the bigger hurdles.
Ramsey Fire Board / June 24, 2020
