Chief Kapler stated that his thought would be to go more with what we have here and not have
floor to ceiling windows.

Jim Way talked about how the Police Department has added furniture overtime as opposed to
buying it all right away. He asked when will the Fire Department be getting all the furnishings
for the second station.

Chief Kapler replied that they are figuring $30,000 to $50,000 for furnishings, etc. We are short
on electronics - computers, etc.

Jim Way stated that they brought their own televisions and refrigerators, etc.

Chief Kapler stated there will be a big effort 'to keep this cost down. We are about 50 percent
over now. What ate up our biggest amount of this is they said about $70 a square foot but now
we are looking at $105 a square foot. That is a 30 percent increase in cost and no difference in
the end product.

A1 Pearson stated that this project should have gotten going about a year ago. It is really ending
up costing the taxpayers a lot of money.

Mayor Gamec suggested that City could have probably saved $300,000 or better if it had gotten
started on this before.

Chief Kapler stated we will not be able to break ground this fall. The good news is we will bid
this job at the best time of the year- December/January.

Chief Kapler stated that Armstrong and 150th is where this second fire station will be. He asked
if this design is too much - is that what "Joe Taxpayer" thinks.

Mayor Gamec thought you might get both reactions from the citizens, but he felt that most
people will want a nice facility.

Jim Way stated we are moving into the 21st century - the days of having pole barns are over.

A1 Pearson stated that people expect good public service. He suggested that fire and pohce are
top priorities.

Mayor Gamec felt there would not be a problem selling this to the Council and/or the public.

Al Pearson also felt it was good. It is a nice looking building - it will enhance people's image of
fire and rescue.

Mayor Gamec inquired if the Fire Department is satisfied.

Dave Lewandowski responded yes, we are excited about it - it is something we did.

Public Safety Board - September 9, 1999
