Mr. Jankowski recommended leaving it alone - it is not a high accident area. He added there are
some negatives with stop signs also. They are not good speed control because people will speed
up to make up the time for the stop.

Councilmelnber Zimmennan inquired if we have looked at anything about kids going down to
the park - should we have a crosswalk sign across Waco.

Public Works Supervisor Riemer stated that could be done.

Mt'. Jankowski stated that stopping two legs is somewhat unusual. He recommended leaving it
as is.

Mr. Bell stated that was reasonable.

Councihnember Hendriksen stated he could see where you could make a good case either way.

Mr. Jankowski pointed out that the two accidents happened before the stop signs were put there.

Motion by Councilmember Zimmerman and seconded by Councilmember Hendriksen to
recommend the City install some crosswalk striping and accompanying signs on Waco, and if
there are more accidents at that intersection, it should be brought back for review.

Motion carried.

Melissa Snyder, 14710 Potassium, stated her concern is with 146th and Potassium. She is
concerned about the speed on Potassium, which is in excess of 45 miles per hour, and there are
no stop signs. She suggested there is no accident history because this is a newly developed area.
She added that the neighborhood participated in the National Night Out and put up barricades
and had about four cars go through the barricades. We need a way to slow the traffic.

Mr. Jankowski stated there is a sidewalk.

Ms. Snyder asked what about when you have to cross Potassium.

Mr. Jankowski stated that speeding is a problem on many City streets. Stop signs are only
effective within 200 feet at best.

Councihnember Zimmennan stated that we mentioned before that we were going to look at this
area. Maybe we need to identify which are main through streets and which are side streets. He
suggested we would have to at least erect some yield signs.

Mr. Jankowski suggested that it might compound speeding on the main streets. He added that
everyone who approaches the intersection has to take some responsibility. Speeding was also
cited as an issue at 143''d and Potassium. He thought it might be a good idea to contact some of
the people we have tried to help and have a task force where staff and the residents could work
together.

Public Works Committee - May 19, 1999
