CASE # 3
Preliminary Introduction of Neighborhood Tree Inventory Results
By: Bruce Bacon, Environmental Specialist
Background:
Last summer, Steve Nicholson of Kunde Co, conducted tree sampling in four subdivisions. His
report, included as Exhibit 1, summarizes the methodology used, tree species and quantities
found, and permits some comparison, generalization and speculation. He offers recommendations
for possible further study. Mr. Nicholson is available to attend the Dec 4 EPB meeting and will
be prepared to answer questions about this report. He has asked that if the Board members have
particular questions for him, it would be beneficial to know ahead of time to better address them.
Recommendation:
Staff recommends reviewing this report and compiling any questions or thoughts on this matter so
that they can be forwarded to Kunde Co prior to the December meeting.
EPB Action
Based on discussion
EPB: 11/6/06
City of Ramsey ReLeaf Inventory
Introduction
During the spring of 2006, an inventory of trees was performed in four subdivisions within the City. Two sampling
techniques were used to inventory trees on lots whose owners gave permission to access their property. This project
was funded, in part, by a Minnesota ReLeaf grant, made possible through the Legislative Committee on Minnesota
Resources (LCMR). The purpose of this project was to gain some insight to the species diversity and size of trees
growing in four subdivisions whose predevelopment conditions differed to some extent. Also, information about
the species of trees growing to regenerate the natural and urban forest was important. Over 2,300 trees on forty
properties were included in the survey.
Procedure
City staff selected four subdivisions to be part of the inventory:
1. Shady Lawn Estates
2. Golden Eagle Estates
3. Sorteberg Addition
