22. Mechanical Inspections
• Water Heater - When conducting inspections for water heater replacements, all
life safety provisions will be inspected first. If there is no separation from
dissimilar materials such as die -electric union, or brass coupling, record as
"Pass with notes" making a note that the applicant was given the handout
associated with this situation. Do not fail the inspection and require a
re -inspection for the absence of a die -electric union as this is up to the applicant.
• Furnace Replacement - Ensure all code and manufacturer requirements are
available. We can pass an inspection with notes. Examples include the
location of unions or, if an ORSAT test was not done. Do not fail the inspection
and require a reinspection. Instead, inform the applicant of their responsibility to
follow not only MSBC but the manufacturer's installation instructions.
• Fuel Gas Fittings & Unions - To ensure code compliance and in the best
interest of all involved, a flared fitting on copper gas lines is allowed as an
approved fitting for removal and installation of new fuel gas burning equipment.
Using a traditional union is at the discretion of the property owner and installer.
Operations Manual 2024 Page 10 of 10
