Geologic identification is interpretive and subject <br />to error. <br /> <br />General categories of geologic deposits, and descriptive information is <br />as f 0 11 ows : <br /> <br />ALLUV IUM <br /> <br />BEDROCK <br /> <br />FILL <br /> <br />GLACIAL TILL <br /> <br />LAKE DEPOS ITS <br /> <br />LOESS <br /> <br />OUTWASH <br />SLOPE WASH <br /> <br />SWAMP DEPOSITS <br /> <br />TOPSOIL <br /> <br />TUMBLEROCK <br /> <br />COARSE ALLUVIUM: Sandy (and gravelly). Stratified. <br />Deposited from fast moving waters in <br />streams, rivers, and deltas. <br /> <br />FINE ALLUVIUM: Clayey and/or silty. Stratified. <br />Deposited from slow moving waters in <br />streams and rivers. <br /> <br />Wide range of characteristics: from hard, dense, <br />consolidated rock; to soft, compressible, and uncon- <br />solidated soil-like material. <br /> <br />CONTROLLED : <br /> <br />Compact, uniform material; inorganic; <br />no debris. <br /> <br />UNCONTROLLED: <br /> <br />Loose or variable density. Mixture <br />of soil types. Often contains debris <br />and organic material. <br /> <br />Normally contains a wide range of grain sizes, from <br />boulders through clay. Usually non-stratified. <br />Deposited directly from glaciers. <br /> <br />Clayey. Laminated. Deposited from very slow moving <br />waters in ponds and lakes. <br /> <br />Silty. Non-stratified.. Upper layer. Deposited from <br />wind. <br /> <br />Coarse alluvium deposited from glacial me1twaters. <br /> <br />Organic and/or inorganic material washed from slopes <br />and redepos ited. <br /> <br />Peat, muck, and marl. Formed through accumulation of <br />organic material under water. <br /> <br />Contains both inorganic and organic material. Upper, <br />black layer of soil. Formed by weathering of in- <br />organic soil and accumulation of organic material. <br /> <br />Dominantly gravel, boulders and rock slabs. Deposited <br />from gravity flow down hills or cliffs. <br /> <br />WEATHERED BEDROCK Bedrock which has been substantially weathered through <br />disintegration or decomposition. Texture and composi- <br />tion grades into bedrock. <br /> <br />WEATHERED SOIL <br /> <br />Texture, composition, and position is intermediate <br />between topsoil and non-weathered soil. <br />
