TERMINOLOGY ON BORING LOGS
GROUND WATER

Ground water information is shown on boring logs:
Measurements" and 2) in the "WB" column.

1) under "Water Level

Information under Water Level Measurements includes:

The depth to the water level (or drilling fluid, if used) and the depth to
the bottom of the hole (cave-in). Water level and cave-tn measurements are
taken with a weighted measuring tape. If free-standing water is not
encountered in the hole. the term wet. or dry, is indicated under "Water
Level." This means that the soil adhering to the end of the measuring tape
did. or did not, respectively. appear to be saturated.

The depth sampled and the depth of casing (or hollow-stem auger) for
measurements made during the progress of the boring.

Date and time of measurements.

Notation in the WB (waterbearing)
to be waterbeari ng or saturated.
questionable or indefinite.

column describes whether soil samples appear
IIY" means yes, IIN" means no, and II?II means

Frozen soil which has thawed appears saturated. This ~ account for an iso-
lated "Y" symbol near the top of the WB column on a boring log.

., ""~

Determination of the depth to the ground water table is an interpretive process.
The determination is based on various factors, including: water level measure-
ments, the presence and type of drilling fluid, the appearance of samples, sub-
surface conditions. site conditions. and weather conditions.

The water level symbol, ~. in the WB column indicates the apparent depth to the
ground water table at the bore hole. The accuracy of the indicated depth to the
ground water table can be quite variable. The water level symbol with an arrow
pointed downward (or upward) indicates that the water level is at or below (or
above) the level indicated. Absence of the water level symbol does not
necessari ly mean ground water was not encountered. or that the water table or
piezometric surf~ce was not penetrated.

The presence of ground water in the soil and the level of the ground water table
can change w1th time. The information in the WB column is based on observations
and measurements made at the time the bori ng was dri 11 ed and the water level
measurements were taken.

F ~ J:C I

Df"I T'f"I
