The awarding of the Business of the Year is a process that needs some work. The criteria which
includes:

1. Been involved in all aspects of the community.
2. Provided for the maintenance or expansion of the commercial/industrial tax base of the community through the
development of new business ventures or the retention or expansion of existing business.
3. Expanded or retained the employment base of the community.
4. Been a positive influence to the business community.

This criteria is somewhat ambiguous and Staff is welcome to suggestions that might make the
award process more concrete. Items such as number of jobs created, tax base created and
specific contributions to the community could be documented and used as specific criteria to
determine the Business of the Year. In addition, there is no process to gather nominations other
than through Staff insight or suggestions from EDA and Council Members. This discussion
about how the Business Appreciation Day can be improved is not a criticism on how it's been
run in the past; it is an opportunity to make a great event better.

.
