..

RAMSEY TOWNSHIP COMPREHENSIVE PLAN1 1973

The City of Ramsey's earliest efforts at preparing a
Comprehensive Plan for the community and creating development
policies, goals, and standards was with the Ramsey Township
Comprehensive Plan. This plan was adopted by the former Ramsey
Township in July, 1973. The significance of this plan is that it
set the stage for the development of future plans, specifically
for the City of Ramsey's 1980 Comprehensive Plan.

Identified goals and objectives of the 1973 Comprehensive Plan

1. A planned and orderly environment should be emphasized.
Land developers should be encourage to try new design
concepts including planned unit development and cluster
housing.

2. Land use activities should be separated but remain
complementary. Industrial uses should be close to
transportation facilities including both the rail and
highways. They should also maintain reasonable access to
commercial service and residential areas.

3. Commercial strip development should be discouraged.
Consideration should be given to deeper frontages with on-
site parking. Frontage roads should be encouraged and both
sign and curb-cut controls are recommended.

4. Land zoned for one purpose should generally exclude other
types of uses. Industrial land should exclude residential
and commercial uses.

5. Environmental assets should be protected and enhanced.
Natural drainage courses or streams should serve as the
framework for a greenbelt system to provide linking
recreational opportunities within every residential area.

6. Neighborhood and community shopping areas should be related
in size and type to the market area they serve.

7. Multiple family housing should be encouraged to locate close
to business areas, major streets and particularly public
transit.

Working Paper #1
City of Ramsey Comprehensive plan Update
Land Use Element

4
