staff the importance of working with a team to accomplish public art as a priority for the city. <br /> The city manager establishes the tone of how the city does business and the arts community <br /> knows that they are valued. The city manager is the "conduit" or liaison to the city council. He <br /> is in a position to understand their concerns, and is able to answer questions about projects. If <br /> the city manager does not support public art, nor recognize its benefits then, she says; "you're <br /> never going to get the money in the budget and staff resources allocated to get this work done." <br /> The Executive Director of the community's art center that in her role she needs to be <br /> open to what the public has to say and represent the community. She says it important for the <br /> city manager to support the work that she does at the art center. She gets support from the city <br /> and they are trusting that she will do her job well. The city manager always shows interest in <br /> what they are doing and tries to understand all the different components. He serves a liaison role <br /> by conveying comments to the arts center director from the public. The community is known as <br /> an arts community. The recent city hall remodeling included artwork that was advocated by city <br /> management and staff. The city manager and staff coordinate communication between the arts <br /> groups, local business, and citizens. She views the city management role to be positive and <br /> supportive of art efforts, and the city helps promote events. The city manager plays a role in <br /> allocating the resources that support local public art. <br /> The local art business owner that was interviewed worked closely with the city art center <br /> and city staff to develop the public arts programs. She, and other local artists, regularly meet <br /> with members of the city staff in a group that serves as an informal public art advisory group for <br /> the city. The city's management staff serves as the leader of this group that involves key staff <br /> from the arts center, planning and economic development department, and public works. It was <br /> the city staff that knew how to make people come together in collaboration and to get things <br /> 128 <br />
