Calgary,for example,achieved this through its long-term WATERSHED+ program,
which saw four artists working within the Utilities and Environmental Protection
department to create original art works that spoke to issues of water conservation
and management, developed through community dialogue and engagement.
Closer to home, the City of Toronto's Solid Waste Management Services Division
has previously piloted an artist-in-residence program with great success, generating
public conversation and awareness about waste management.
2.8 Pursue new opportunities for destination public art
A destination art work is a major commission that functions as a landmark and
gathering space. In addition to being a focal point for a community, it can serve
as a tourist attraction and result in spin-off economic benefits for its host city. In
Canada and around the world, prominent destination artworks have put cities on
the map as international public art destinations, including Anish Kapoor's Cloud
Gate in Chicago, the iconic murals of San Francisco's Mission District, and
Louise Bourgeois' Maman sculpture marking the entry to the National Gallery of
Canada in Ottawa. Closer to home, new destination artwork is contemplated for
Toronto as part of the East Bayfront Public Art Master Plan, and as a potential
legacy project for the Year of Public Art. Supporting this and other new destina-
tion art projects will showcase Toronto as a public art city, and create more
opportunities to engage residents and visitors in creative and cultural discovery
through public art.
"1 01111'N ii I
HIM
J0
4'411'111"
.............
RM
MANOR
W.
4
JIF
N61
/W
Yoga
Bellefleur,StART Co/ncreteR,rri,er,/Pro/g,,ra,,m Phlotb:,HarFy,///Ghoi/
w
Al
Toronto Public Art Strategy 2020/2030 39
