CASE # ~

CONSIDER POLICY FOR
TRAFFIC CONTROL MODIFICATION REQUESTS
By: Steven Jankowski, City Engineer

Background:

The City periodically receives citizen requests for traffic control modifications. The
current policy for bringing an issue before the Public Works Committee for review
requires only a written request or an' email from a single individual. Researching and <
addressing these requests involve a considerable amount of staff time and resources
including the taking of traffic counts, reviewing accident histories, and preparing
materials for presentation to the Committee.

This issue was reviewed by the Public Works Committee at the September 19, 2006
meeting and it was recommended to City Council that staff be directed to modify the
policy for presenting traffic modification requests to the Public Works Committee. The
City Council responded at their October 10, 2006 meeting by directing that such a policy
require a petition signed by five property owners or residents residing within 500 feet of
the requested traffic modification.

Attached to this case is a draft policy requiring a written request for a traffic control
modification to be signed by at least five property owners or residents residing within 500
feet of the requested traffic modification.

.
Recommendation:

Staff recommends that the Public Works Committee recommend to the City Council that
the attached Policy for Traffic Control Modification Requests be adopted.

Action:

Motion to recommend to the City Council that the attached Policy for Traffic Control
Modification Requests be adopted.

Reviewed By:
Director of Public Works/Principal Engineer
Fire Chief
Street Supervisor
Police Chief

PW: 10/17/06

23
