Motion Carried. Voting Yes: Chairperson Nixt, Commissioners Trites Rolle, Brauer, Cleveland,
Hunt, Levine, and Van Scoy. Voting No: None. Absent: None.
The public hearing was closed at 7:10 p.m.
Commission Business
Chairperson Nixt called the regular meeting of the Planning Commission back to order at 7:10
p.m.
Mr. Bob Hamborg, applicant, stated he appreciates the City taking the time and effort to work on
this request. He did not arbitrarily pick the size for this structure; he owns a rather large boat and
has some other items he would like to put inside instead of storing them outside. Mr. Hamborg
presented photographs of his property and the proposed location for the structure. Mr. Hamborg
stated he has been using the barn structure on his property for storage for 12 to 13 years, which
he now uses for repair of their vehicles. That structure is filled up to where he needs to pull
everything out of the way when he wants to get to the lift. Mr. Hamborg explained the boat that
he would like to store inside is a shared venture between he and his brother. He has tried to keep
the location of the accessory structure behind the neighbor's current outbuilding. He poured the
slab to try to get the building accomplished this fall, and went strictly off the plan that the
surveyor gave him for the correct level for proper drainage. Mr. Hamborg explained with the
proposed width of the structure he will have the ability to fit his snowmobile trailers and have a
little space on the side and down the middle to walk between them. The proposed length will
allow just enough room for his truck and the boat to fit in the structure. From the street there is a
knoll, which reduces the visibility of the structure. Mr. Hamborg explained 10 foot walls are
needed on the structure because the boat is so tall, but he has found the shortest pitch rafters that
he could, and the structure should be less than 15 feet tall. His argument to the Commission is
that he needs the requested amount of space to store the vehicles and equipment he has, and that
he did not just arbitrarily create the size for the structure. The other thing that drives his
accessory structure size up so high is that they built a large garage, but the house is not that large.
Chairperson Nixt asked what size the lot would need to be to justify the requested size for the
accessory structure.
Assistant Community Development Director Frolik replied the lot is approximately 1 to 1 %2
acres short to qualify for this size structure.
Chairperson Nixt commented the applicant could still accomplish his objective of storing the
boat and trailer with a smaller structure, but he would not be able to store anything else.
Mr. Hamborg replied he has a tractor he would like to put in the structure as well.
Chairperson Nixt commented the policy of the Commission has been to advocate getting things
indoors and covered, rather than storing things outdoors. He asked if there has been any
opposition to this request.
Planning Commission/November 2, 2006
