P
are alert to leaf symptoms on their Oal( trees bee
of Oak Wilt. Anthracnose leaf symptoms are
more prevalent on lower branches, whereas Oak
Wilt symptoms are in upper crown and outward
extremities. Anthracnose is a fungus disease
associated with cool and damp spring weather,
only affects the leaves, and is commonly asso-
ciated with White and Bur Oak trees and, to a
lesser extent, with Ash trees. A tree will send
out new replacement leaves and Anthracnose
will not usually repeat year after year on the san
tree. Often infected trees will stand next to saml
species of tree showing no symptoms. Red Oaks are
much less prone to Anthracnose, so leaf wilting symp-

t()m~ 0n Red Oaks is a grave concern.
Jal( Wilt is a fungus disease transported in the
fthe entire tree, and to adjacent trees of the
e species through root grafts. Anthracnose on
: other hand only infects leaves with the spores
ored and transported from the ground. Call for
l tree inspection if you are unsure about symp-
toms of your tree.
The City of Ramsey again sponsors
a cost share program with property own-
ers, with matching funding through the
MN DNR for the control of Oak Wilt.
