ANOKA AREA GARDENERS

The Anoka Area Gardeners is the new name for
the Anoka Garden Club which began in 1944. The
new name was selected to encourage membership
throughout Anoka County and surrounding areas.
The club maintains a full schedule of garden
meetings and tours throughout the year.
The October meeting of the Anoka Area
Gardeners will feature speaker Molly Danielson, a
Master Gardener with the Anoka Extension Service
on pests and disease of garden plants. The public
is invited to attend by calling the club contact, Betty
Peterson at 753-2493 for more details. Upcoming ac-
tivities include a tour of a major private orchid col-
lection in November. If you are interested in garden-
ing or new to the Anoka area and would like to know
more about how to grow things in the Anoka area,
join the club as a guest at one of their meetings. If
you have general gardening questions and can't wait
to get to the meetings, call the Extension Service at
755-1280.
MASTER GARDENERS
PROGRAM TO BEGIN

The Anoka County Extension Service invites in-
terested gardeners who would like to learn more
about gardening in a 40 hour course at the Univer-
sity of Minnesota to check out the Master Gardener
Program. In exchange for the free training from
University experts, participants are required to
donate 50 hours of volunteer time in the county.
Master Gardeners volunteer time answering garden
questions for the public. They participate at answer
booths at the county and state fairs. Some have
been involved in community gardens and also made
presentations to various civic groups on gardening
subjects.
If you have some time to spare and enjoy sharing
gardening information with others call the Extension
Office at 755-1280 for a Master Gardener applica-
tion today. Deadline for applications is October 23,
1989.

FERTILIZING LAWNS IN THE

LATE FALL IS BEST

When you apply high nitrogen fertilizers to your
lawn in the spring, you also set the lawn and yourself
up for problems. Disease thrives on the excessive
top growth inspired by spring fertilizing, and the lawn
is left vulnerable to drought.
A dose of nitrogen in the late fall can increase root
growth in the spring, decrease spring mowing, and
improve the lawns resistance to drought, disease,
and weed pressure.
You have to be careful to time your application cor-
rectly. Apply your nitrogen after shoot growth has
ended, but before the turf turns brown. Nitrogen ap-
plied too early could result in excessive top growth,
which drains carbohydrates from the turf grass
reserves, making them more vulnerable to winterkill.
There is a fact sheet, "Fertilizing Lanws",
available through the Anoka County Extension Ser-
vice. For this and more information call 755-1280.

Some other informative brochures available from the
Anoka County Extension Service upon request are:

1. Protecting trees and shrubs against winter
damage.
2. Composting and mulching: a guide to managing
organic yard wastes.
3. Pruning trees and shrubs.
4. Pruning fruit trees.

Call 755-1280.

GET YOUR FREE WOOD CHIPS

Free wood and brush chips generated in the City's
woodchipping program are being stockpiled at Cen-
tral Park and available for use by residents. You may
pick them up at your convenience and in any quan-
tity. Whether you need a truckload or a pail full,
they're yours for the taking. Placement of the
wood/brush chips around trees, shrubs or any plan-
tings aids greatly in retaining the moisture and ad-
ding nutrients to the soil. If you have any questions
pertaining to any aspect of the brush chipping pro-
gram, please call Jim Gromberg at 427-1410.

FIREPLACE AND
WOOD STOVE USERS

What do you do with fireplace or wood stove ashes?
Old, "cold" ashes can ignite paper sacks, plastic
trash cans and cardboard boxes. Dispose of ashes
only in a metal container with a metal lid.

Northfork annual neighborhood picnic.

The homeowners in the Northfork neighborhood
held their annual picnic on August 12 and it was a
super success.
The family gathering started off with a hayride for
the children while the adults played horseshoes and
volleyball or just visited. Games for the children were
lively, ending in a water balloon toss.
Everyone enjoyed the delicious potluck picnic.
At 8:00 p.m., the country band "Head Over
Heels", provided the musical entertainment until
midnight, at which time the adults took their own
hayride.
Everyone is looking forward to next year's
neighborhood get-together.
