RAMSEY RECEIVES SECOND
YEAR DEMONSTRATION
GRANT FROM
METROPOLITAN COUNCIL

The City of Ramsey has been awarded a second
year demonstration grant from the Metropolitan
Council for the second year decentralized brush
chipping program. The second year of the
demonstration program will continue with the decen-
tralized brush chipping operation and disease con-
trol in Ramsey. The program will also be developed
to cut down on the number of burning permits issued
each year. This year's grant funds will also be used
to develop a comprehensive plan for the propaga-
tion of urban forests in the region. Although the first
year demonstration program was very successful,
it is hoped that the problems encountered will be
remedied by the changes in the second year of the
program. Applications for the second year of the pro-
gram will be different than the first year of the pro-
gram. Watch for your Ramsey Resident Newsletter
in March for applications. Residents with questions
should call Jim Gromberg at 427-1410 for more
information.
FOOD PROGRAM

EXPANDS ENROLLMENT

The Anoka County WIC Program has begun a
campaign to enroll more pregnant women into the
WIC food program. Additional federal dollars
allocated to the Anoka County WIC Program can
serve an additional 300 people a month, making a
total of more than 3,200. In addition to pregnant
women, eligible WIC participants can include nurs-
ing mothers, infants, and children up to age five who
meet criteria set by WIC.
Coupons are issued to participants and are used
to buy milk, cheese, eggs, juice and cereal or infant
formula. WIC participants also receive free nutrition
assessments, diet counseling and nutrition educa-
tion. The goal of the program is to promote the
development of healthy babies and small children
by helping families make wise food choices.
Although WIC has been highly successful in
Anoka County, many potentially eligible women are
not currently participating in the program, according
to Peggy Heaver, MPH, RD, supervisor of the Anoka
County WIC Program. Good nutrition is especially
important in pregnancy. Heaver noted studies show-
ing that a proper diet during pregnancy can mean
a healthier baby at birth and fewer health problems
as the child grows up.
Heaver says a number of studies have confirmed
that the program has a significant impact on the
health of mothers and children who participate. In
particular, it has been found that pregnant women
participating in WIC have fewer premature and low
birth weight babies. They are also more likely to
begin prenatal care early in their pregnancies and
are less likely to have stillbirths. Children who par-
ticipate in WIC tend to have better memories and
larger vocabularies. WIC participants and their
families tend to have better diets than
non-participants.
For more information on the WIC program or to
apply, call 422-7055.
Heaver notes that WIC is an equal opportunity pro-
gram. Persons who believe they have been
discriminated against because of race, color, na-
tional origin, age, sex or handicap should write im-
mediately to the U.S. Department of Agriculture,
3101 Park Center Drive, Alexandria, Virginia 22302.
