1990 ARBOR DAY

CELEBRATION IS

BIGGEST AND BEST EVER

This year 2800 white spruce, blue spruce and Norway pine
seedlings were distributed free to residents at the Tree Sale,
Green Business Expo, Pet Vaccination Clinic, the Municipal
Center during the week between Arbor Day (April 28) and
Clean Up Day (May 5), and the Regional Landfill on Clean
Up Day. Five-hundred trees were given to the Community
School for distribution to students at Ramsey Elementary
School.
Noble Nursery sponsored the annual Tree Sale on April
28 and they report that Ramsey's tree and shrub population
will be increasing significantly as 2,935 items were sold that
morning.
The Green Business Expo at the Ramsey Municipal Center
on April 28 consisted of 4 local 'green' businesses and 7
educational displays. Green Valley Green House brought bed-
ding plans and flower baskets; Wirz Nursery had potted
evergreens; Bruce Bachler sold homemade maple syrup; and
the Anoka Food Co-op brought snacks and beverages. The
Anoka Soil and Water Conservation District had a slide show
on erosion control; the Anoka County Extension Office was
represented by Jeanette Monear (Oak Wilt Coordinator) and
Molly Danielson (Horticultural Specialist). The Anoka Area
Gardeners staffed an information table. Ramsey's Park and
Recreation Commission had a display set up and the Min-
nesota Food Association and Mississippi River Revival pro-
vided information about their work. Organic Lawn Care Ser-
vice had a representative present to provide information.
Volunteer Jo Thieling was present to take orders for Arbor
Day T-Shirts, pass out environmental brochures and assist
in distributing tree seedlings to residents. Mr. Bernie Stef-
fen was present providing handouts regarding the positive
aesthetic and economic values of trees.
Mayor Reimann and Council members Pearson and Peter-
son presided at the Arbor Day Ceremony. The plantings in-
cluded a lovely spruce tree and lilac bush donated by Wirz
Nursery, a weeping willow donated by Noble Nursery, and
3 meteor pie cherry trees and two weeping crab apple trees.
Following the Arbor Day ceremony, hundreds of trees were
planted at City Hall and Brookview Park. Jim Strosheim and
his Boy Scout Troop #362 volunteered to spread wood chips
around the seedlings planted at City Hall to protect the roots
from summer heat and winter cold. This same process was
used last year and more than half of last year's plantings
survived the drought.
In recognition of Arbor Day, the DNR Arbor Month Com-
mittee donated 2500 bare root red pine and Norway spruce
seedlings to the City for planting. The plantings were ac-
complished by students from Sandburg Middle School under
the supervision of Mark Boos, Parks and Utilities Coordinator;
students from Ramsey Elementary School under the super-
vision of Community Education Director Claudia Dodge; and
the Girl Scout troops of Kim Langfield, Paul Staples and Wila
Heger participating with 4-H Groups - Lamplighters (Gayle
Rogers) - Cheerful Chuggers (Kathi Peterson) - Ramsey Road
Runners (Glen Hardin) - Lucky Clovers (Barb Yenish).
With community involvement like this, it's no mystery that
Ramsey achieved Tree City USA designation.

RAMSEY CLEANS UP IN 1990

On May 5, 1990 the City of Ramsey celebrated its 7th an-
nual cleanup day. Over 480 residents participated by taking
advantage of the opportunity to drop off a load of debris
at the landfill at no charge. We are very, very pleased to
announce that this year the wait in line to enter the landfill
was, on the average, 2-3 minutes in length.
There are no figures available regarding the number of
residents that took advantage of the various brush drop-off
sites located throughout the City but it is obvious that this
feature of the clean up day program provided a much need-
ed service. Approximately 40 cubic yards of brush was
received at the City Hall site; 10 cubic yards at the River's
Bend Park site; 60 cubic yards at the Titterud Park site; 100
cubic yards at the Central Park site; and 10 cubic yards at
the Cross of Hope Church site.
Another 35 households took advantage of the pickup ser-
vice for tires, appliances and batteries provided by the
Ramsey Lions on the weekend of April 28th.
The amounts of special materials that were recycled dur-
ing the Clean Up day and pickup weekends are as follows:

MATERIAL WEIGHT

Metal 11.70 Tons
Tires 8.30 Tons
Appliances 13.80 Tons
Batteries 3.82 Tons

Total 37.62 Tons

(There are no figures available at this time regarding the
amounts of newspaper, glass and aluminum that were recyl-
ed during Clean Up Day).
Over 100 residents assisted in clearing litter from road-
side ditches and parks. These volunteers were treated to a
picnic lunch served by the Ramsey Senior Citizens.
