4-H ARTS-IN

BIGGER THAN EVER!

Nine years ago this summer, the Anoka County Extension
Service - 4-H youth development program organized a group
of 18 4-H members. Armed with one guitar and aided by 12
adult volunteers, they created a sing-along show and perform-
ed atthe Anoka County Fair. Today, this program has expand-
ed to over 85 4-H participants accompanied by an eight piece
band and numerous staff and adult volunteers. The program
is called the 4-H Arts-In.

Arts-In gathers 4-Hers from around the county ages 8 to 18
and puts together an exciting song and dance routine which
is performed in the 4-H building and the bandshell during the
Anoka County Fair. To prepare for this, the 4-Hers attend three
evenings plus five day-long rehearsals. During these re-
hearsals, they learn songs and choreography which they will
be performing, plus they meet many new friends and learn
more about themselves. Because of the larger than expected
enrollment this year, the cost of running the show has in-
creased and donations are now being sought to help defray
the cost of costumes, music, meals, and other items.

This years orientation was held at the Activity Center in Bunker
Hills Park on June 19. Here the participants and parents
received their first glimpse of what this years Arts-In has in
store. The evening began with a game show to present the
guidlines for the Arts-In in a fun way. Then, to prepare the
4-Hers for what the show would bring, they were divided into
groups and given fifteen minutes to come up with a three
minute skit as to to what the first performance would be like.
Following a supper break, some songs and movements were
taught from this summers show. Solo tryouts were next on
the agenda. An impressive three-quarters of the participants
tried out showing their enthusiasm to be on stage in front of
an audience! The evening ended with a parents meeting where
the goals, expectations, and costume needs were discussed.

The performances during the County Fair impress large audi-
ences of fairgoers each year, but the real importance of the
program is what it can do for the youth involved. Embarking
on her fifth year of directing the Arts-In, Kirstin Petersen feels
the program is "A whole experience of learning how to work
together, set goals and how to achieve those goals. You learn
about others, yourself, your capabilities, and what your poten-
tial really is. You learn not what you can do for the show, but
what you can do for you life." 4-H members who have par-
ticipated explain that their experience in Arts-In has given them
the courage to run for student counselor other challenging
goals. Their success lies not only in the show they perform,
but also in how they learn and grow through the process.
With around 50 returning performers and over 30 new 4-H
members, this program is becoming increasingly popular
in both the 4-H program and as entertainment at the Anoka
County Fair.
Spring and Summer Sports Coming to a Close and Board
Approaches Council for Development of Two More Ballfields
in the City

RY AA's spring and summer sports are reaching near end and
the organization hopes that all 793 children registered had a
great season. Registration for spring and summer sports this
year was up by 30% over last year.

The RY AA Board apologizes for the confusion resulting from
the lack of fields available for practices. The need to have prac-
tices and games completed by a reasonable hour is understood
but restricted by the number of playing fields available iln the
City. The Board is working with the Park and Recreation Com-
mission and the City Council to find some way to come up with
the funding to develop two more ballfields yet this year that
would be available for use in 1991. The City Council reviewed
the request on July 10 and has stated a desire to attempt to
find dollars as well as volunteers to be able to develop two
additional ballfields in the most cost efficient manner possi-
ble. Council will again be reviewing the issue at their July 24
meeting at 7:30 p.m. Please mark this date on your calendar
and try to be present at the meeting to show Council your sup-
port for the request for development of two more ballfields in
Ramsey.

RY AA would like to take this opportunity to thank all the
businesses who helped this year by sponsoring teams. It is
through this support that RY AA is able to keep the cost of
registration for spring and summer sports at an affordable level
for participants.

NOTE TO PARENTS AND CHILDREN: It has become necessary
to charge deposits for uniforms as a result of uniforms not be-
ing returned at the end of the season. Please return your
uniforms to your coach. Thank you.

NOTE TO ALL COACHES: Please return your equipment to the
equipment room at the end of the season. Thanks for your help
in making our season a success.

Any problems or concerns should be sent to Beverly Swan-
son at 7003 164th Avenue N.W., Ramsey, Minnesota 55303.
All concerns will be discussed at the RY AA monthly board
meetings unless the individual has requested otherwise. The
RY AA Board meets the 4th Monday of each month (July 23,
August 20, etc.) at 7:30 p.m. in the Teen Center at Central
Park. Your comments and suggestions are appreciated; they
help to make the organization stronger.

SUMMER PROBLEMS

HEATING UP?

Is your neighbor taking the hose to your cat for what it is do-
ing in her garden? Are your kids threatening to tie up the
neighbor kids the next time they write something nasty about
them on the sidewalk?

With summer here, remember that mediation services are
available without charge and in a timely fashion.

Mediation is an approach to conflict resolution in which an im-
partial third party - mediator - intervenes in a dispute with
the consent of the parties, to aid and assist them in reaching
a mutually satisfactory settlement to issues in dispute.

Relationship conflicts are the most common case for media-
tion. These disputes usually involve parties who display strong
negative emotions, repetitive negative behavior, harbor
misperceptions, have poor lines of communication going or
have quit communication altogether. Parties are often related
by neighborhood, apartment building or townhouse. At the top
of the list of frustration is other people's kids or pets.

Problems picking up or dropping off kids to visit an ex-spouse
can escalate into nasty words. MEDIATION SERVICES has
successfully intervened to help parties find a mutually
agreeable settlement to specific problems. Large group pro-
blems, environmental issues, landlord/tenant problems,
business/consumer disputes, zoning and ordinance issues,
charges of discrimination and other concerns have been suc-
cessfully resolved too.

If you think you have a case for mediation or would like more
information, please call our office at 755-5300.
