DELUCA o GLEN HARDIN o DWIGHT "BEAR" MARTEN o ALAN PEARSON o o Eric Mixdorf LOCAL EMPLOYEE HEADED FOR STATE 'BEST BAGGER' CONTEST Eric Mixdorf of Ramsey recently won the "Best Bag- ger" contest at LeTourneau's Super Value. Mixdorf and 13 other LeTourneau Super Value baggers were judged on speed, proper bag building techniques, number of bags used, distribution of weight between bags, general style, as well as attitude and ap- pearance. Mixdorf will now compete in the Min- nesota State Grocers Association "Best Bagger" Contest on Saturday, October 20 at the Minneapolis Convention Center. Minnesota's "Best Bagger" will win a trip for two to New Orleans to compete at the National Grocers Association's "Best Bagger" con- test in January, 1991. HUNTING IN RAMSEY By: Police Chief Auspos This article comes a little late into the season I realize but please be charitable and let me rely on the old say, "Better late than never." Hunting in Ramsey, with a firearm, is just about "kaput"! What with the ordinance stating: A. The on- ly firearm that can be discharged is a shotgun and then with nothing larger (physically) than number four shot and B; no firearm may be discharged closer than 500 yards from a structure (note that this doesn't mean just a residence!), there are very few places one could hunt in this city. There are a cou- ple of places yet where you could stand in one spot and be over 500 yards from a structure but you would have to expect the game to come running to you with a death wish because any movement on your part in any direction other than up or down would likely put you within 500 yards of any structure. Deer hunting with a bow and arrow(s) is allowed under the following circumstances: A. Not within 300 yards of any residential struc- ture, commercial structure, park or playground and, B. Not within 150 yards of any trunk highway. C. A city permit is required. Applicants must have proof of permission to hunt on the tract of land that meets the above criteria. If you have any questions about what area(s) may still be legal for hunting please come by the police department as we have a map which we can look at and make a determination. Now let me address the river areas and burst a few bubbles for prospective hunters. The DNR Con- servation Officer tells me that the 500 yard limit starts at Ramsey's boundary lines and in all cases concerning the Mississippi and Rum Rivers, that line goes to the center of the river (the main channel). For purposes of enforcement we will order persons to cease hunting (or possibly issue citations) who are in Ramsey's boundaries and discharge a firearm closer than 500 yards from a structure. If you are hunting in Andover and Dayton you should check with those communities for their regulations concer- ning hunting and discharge of firearms. What this says then is that the rivers are not wide open to hunting and in fact, most areas won't qualify for legal shooting, particularly, but not limited to, the River's Bend area and the islands in the Mississippi. You must also follow all Minnesota hunting rules and regulations if you plan to hunt in the city. Our ordinance basically just applies to discharge of firearms. Also keep in mind the trespass laws as they apply to hunting: Get permission before you enter the lands of another, just to be safe. Please help us keep this a safe city for all our citizens. I'm sure it won't be long and all discharge of firearms, shotgun or otherwise, will be prohibited in the City and fur- ther problems with uncaring hunters will only serve to hasten the arrival of that day.
