A WORD FROM YOUR

TREE INSPECTOR

By Bruce Bacon

Drought, stress and disease increase tree maintenance
needs. Drought means stress for trees and plants. Stress
means opportunity for disease problems. Dead and dying
trees mean a disposal problem. Prompt disposal controls
the spread of bark beetles and fungus; watering and thinn-
ing decreases stress. Neighborhood control and maintenance
efforts are more effective than individual efforts.
Pine Tree mortality has increased this summer and the
bark beetle population is a threat to nearby pines. Dead and
dying trees need to be burned, chipped or removed from
the site. You can consider thinning your standing pines if
they are spaced too closely to mature. You can also be water-
ing your trees.
PCA open burning permits are available for 30 day periods
for disposal of diseased wood. The burning pile must be 600
feet from the nearest neighboring dwelling. Permits may be
obtained by applying at City Hall.
Homeowners can also dispose of diseased wood by haul-
ing it to the Anoka County Wood Disposal Site on Hanson
Blvd., just north of East Main Street. The cost is $5.00 per
pickup load. Hours are:
Monday, Wednesday, Friday - Noon to 7:30 p.m.
Tuesday, Thursday - Closed
Saturday - 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Sunday - Noon to 5:00 p.m.

NOTE: Pine wood can be used for outdoor campfires but
can be hazardous when burned in stoves and fireplaces. Pine
wood is resinous when burned, these residues can build up
in the chimney and ignite as a chinmey fire.
BUSINESS SCENE

By: Ramsey Economic Development Commission

Brothers Geno and George Moroz have been business part-
ners since 1969. Shortly after Genos tours of duty in Viet-
nam (USMC) they started their upholstering business in
George's basement. From there they moved to a shop in
Anoka where they stayed until they built a store on their land
at 6013 - 167th Ave. NW. in Ramsey. In 1976 they moved
the upholstery shop there and also added a line of new
furniture.
Wanting to get into a different business and seeing a need
in this rural area, they gave up their upholstering and fur-
niture business and opened a hardware store, Moroz OK
Hardware, in 1979. A year later they added self-serve gas
pumps.
In 1985 they added five more stores to form a strip shop-
ping center. In one of the stores they opened another
business, Moroz Auto Parts Pro. That store has been manag-
ed by Mike Haller since it opened.
Most recently, they opened a convenience store in the spot
where the auto parts store was and moved the auto parts
store down two doors. The convenience store, G & G Foods,
is managed by Kathy Rosse and Donna Swank and the gas
pumps are now connected to that store.
All three stores are open seven days a week.
The other spaces in the center are rented by Video Up-
date, The Place (billiards and amusements), and Joy' Gifts.
George and his family have lived in Ramsey since 1971
and Geno and his family have lived here since 1979.
RAMSEY JAYCEES

RECYCLING CENTER

The Ramsey Jaycees in conjunction with Waste Manage-
ment of Minnesota, Inc. maintain a recycling center at the
Anoka Regional Sanitary Landfill on Sunfish Lake Blvd. The
Center is open during landfill operating hours, Monday-Friday,
7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturdays, 8:00 a.m. to 1 :00
p.m.
Containers are provided for newspaper, metals, aluminum
and glass. Newspapers should be bagged, boxed or bundl-
ed. Items exclusively made of metal are accepted. No ap-
pliances, drums, household garbage, or combination of metal
and other materials are acceptable for recycling at this time.
Glass must be separated by color: clear, light brown and
green. (Note: Appliances can be disposed of at the landfill
for $10/each. Tires can be disposed of at the landfill for $5.00
each or $7.00 with rims.
Residents are urged to start recycling now. No amount
of recyclable items is too small; it all helps to reduce the
flow into the landfill and all proceeds from the recycling
center are turned over to the Ramsey Jaycees to be used
for community service projects.
In addition to the Jaycees proceeds, the City of Ramsey
can receive a $4 per ton reimbursement from the State of
Minnesota for any materials recycled within the City.
