STRAWBERRY ROOT WEEVILS

In the house - Weevils are small, often dark-
colored hard-shelled insects with mouthparts
elongat~d into a short snout. They are mysteriously
attracted to the interior of homes. They enter
buildings using available entry points, such as cracks
in the foundation, around loose fitting screens and
doors, and under siding.
Once inside, weevils are found crawling on ceil-
ings and walls. They are also seen around sinks and
bathtubs because they are often attracted by
moisture. There is no apparent reason for them to
come inside but fortunately they don't bite or cause
any damage. They are a temporary problem and are
only a nuisance because they are in people's homes.
Caulking cracks and using tight fitting scree!1s and
doors will help minimize the number of weevils that
come inside. Because some weevils are attracted
by moisture, placing pans of water outside the house
can trap and drown weevils. An insecticide, ~uch as
diazinon, can be sprayed around the foundation and
other places where they are entering, although the
effect is temporary. The weevils that do get inside
can be controlled by physically removing them, e.g.
with a vacuum cleaner.
In the home strawberry patch - Apply Malathion
at one to two pounds per acre of active ingredient
as a foliar application as needed, but at least three
days before harvesting berries.
ty Extension Office for the Commercial Fruit Spray
Guide for the current year.
CURFEW ORDINANCE

By: Chief Auspos

Elsewhere in this newsletter is the text of
Ramsey's new Curfew ordinance. Please read it over
carefully so that you and your family will have a good
understanding of its impact and importance.
Ramsey, for many years has had a curfew or-
dinance. So this is, in concept, nothing new. The
new ordinance is however more definitive and
broader in its scope.
Parents and children, please look the ordinance
over and become familiar with it. I think it is fair and
the enforcement policy will be reasonable. Note that
section 110.113 places a responsibility upon the
parents who just flat allow their children to roam and
run in the neighborhoods without restriction. Also,
please take note that it doesn't say a child absolutely
can't be out and about after the curfew hour. Rather,
it says that for the child to be out there must exist
a reasonable necessity to be doing so. The business
about the child's being out after those hours without
a reasonable necessity being evident simply means
that just being out is evidence of violation but the
officer can consider other factors as further
evidence. In other words, lets say a Ramsey officer
stops a couple of youngsters who are under the age
for the curfew hours and we'll use 1 :30 a.m. for the
example. He observes them to be walking south on
Ramsey Blvd. in the 14900 block. When asked
where they are going and they reply, "We are go-
ing home" the officer then asks where they live. Both
reply that they live in the 16000 block of Ramsey
Blvd. Now, they are either very confused as to their
directions or they plan on covering about 25,000
miles around the globe to get home. Since neither
of the two prospects are likely, the officer will take
them into custody and cite for a curfew violation.
They will either be taken to the PO and the parents
called or if the officer has other calls holding he may
run them to their houses and wake up the parent(s)
to accept them and the citations. However, if in fact
the officer hears convincing statements about their
intentions and feels comfortable with this he may
take them to their homes and drop them off, again
after waking the parents to take custody and no cita-
tion will be issued.
We fully realize that the curfew is not a panacea
for the problem of vandalism and theft. There will
always be a certain percentage of youths who are
not monitored by their parents and run at all hours.
They will attempt to avoid contact with the police and
are, likely, intent on committing vandalism or steal-
ing. Because it is very dark on our streets and they
can see us coming, this type can easily hide and
we'll have to try other ways to deal with them. For
the vast majority however the curfew serves to keep
the honest ones honest and to set some guidelines
for acceptable community behavior.
As I said, we will enforce this curfew with reason
and in the spirit of the law as much as possible. It
may be that a trip to the city hall at 1 :30 in the morn-
ing will jog the consciousness of a parent or two and
some kids will be removed from situations which
could lead them to troubles with the community.
Thank you.
