SEATBELTS DO WORK

USE THEM (Please)

(Subtitle of article - Confessions of a Die Hard)

Many years ago when this author was a young and
impetuous rookie he would always buckle up the lap
belt (that's all there was then - NO, it didn't go around
the saddle and cinch belt - we had cars!) when he
went on patrol. Then the engineers got smart and
made them so that you could not start the car without
buckling up. Well old Mike exercised his Norwegian
stubborness and quit wearing the belts. Figured I'd
show them a thing or two. Real bright!! In 1987 my
youngest son took his driving instructions and pro-
ceeded to put the pressure on about all the family
buckling up. Well, we gave in and have worn them
r~ligiously since .and guess ,who sometimes goes
without his on? HIs excuse? I m in a hurry!! Another
one is, "Sometimes you are better off if you don't
have it on because I know a friend of mine who has
a friend who has a cousin who knows someone who
once nearly was killed because of...". HOGWASH!
In twenty-three (23) years I can only think of one in-
stance when I can say without a doubt that a per-
son would not have died (at least in the way he died
- he may have died anyway) if he had not been buckl-
ed in. Beyond that there are innumerable instances
when I feel quite safe in saying that the person
MOST LIKELY would not have been killed or even
severely injured if he or she would have been belted
in, especially with the advent of shoulder belts. Since
the passage of the law requiring the wearing of belts
and then with the addition of the fine for non-
compliance I personally believe that I have seen a
substantial reduction in serious injuries because the
persons involved were all buckled up. One on
Ramsey Blvd. recently, comes to mind, in which a
young man suffered pelvis injuries even though
buckled in. This was because his car was t-boned
in the driver's door and the door came in about a
foot or so. It is quite possible however that had he
not been wearing his belt and shoulder harness he
would have flown up and sideways striking his head
against the frame above the door and ended up
either a vegetable or dead or he may have rebound-
ed and he and his passenger given each other a fatal
kiss with their heads. No folks, I really don't want
to hear that story about being saved by not wearing
a belt. Please put them on. If for no other reason,
spare your relatives the grief. A crushed thigh bone
or broken, shattered knees or road mapped face
f~om ~indshield glas~ will ~~ss you up for a long
time, likely even for life so It IS more than worth it
to buckle up. The one in a million or more odds of
being killed when buckled up as opposed to the odds
in your favor if you are secured just don't justify not
clicking the ends together. All together now, one,
two, three...CLlCK!

BUSINESS SCENE

By: Ramsey Economic Development Commission
George and Mary Tafoya started out their first hair
salon named Village Hair Design in 1980 in Coon
Rapids. Since then they opened a salon in Rum
River Plaza in Ramsey and changed the name to
TAFOYA SALON to make the name more personal.
From the beginning they employed 6 people and
today they employ over 20 stylists and receptionists.
Since the first salon was opened they have added
a full spectrum of services -- hair care, skin care, nail
care and tanning. Plans for expansion are in
development stages again. The need for quality ser-
vices in the salon business is high.
George and Mary hand pick their stylists and per-
sonally train them so that every person that comes
in t<? their salons will receive the best possible
service.

George and Mary Tafoya

RAMSEY

SENIOR CITIZENS CLUB

The Ramsey Senior Club had 26 members and
one visitor attend the picnic at the Weigh Station
Park on Wednesday, June 15. It was a very warm
day but there was plenty of food and visiting.
At 1 :30, the group toured the Cargill farm to see
the latest in pig and dairy operations; all the seniors
agreed that farming has become very modern since
their time.
The~next meeting of the Ramsey Senior Citizens
Club will be potluck luncheon at noon on Wednes-
day, July 6 in the lower level of the Ramsey City Hall.

RAMSEY JAYCEES
RECYCLING CENTER

The Ramsey Jaycees in conjunction with Waste
~anagement of Minnesota, Inc. maintain a recycl-
mg center at the Anoka Regional Sanitary Landfill
on Sunfish Lake Blvd. The center is open during
landfill operating hours, Monday-Friday, 7:00 a.m.
to 5:00 p.m. and Saturdays, 8:00 a.m. to 1 :00 p.m.
Co.ntainers are provided for newspaper, metals,
aluminum and glass. Newspapers should be bagg-
ed, boxed or bundled. Items exclusively made of
metal are accepted. No appliances, drums,
household garbage, or combination of metal and
<?ther materials are acceptable for recycling at this
time. Glass must be separated by color: clear, light
brown and green. (Note: Appliances can be dispos-
ed of at the landfill for $1 O/each. Tires can be dispos-
ed of at the landfill for $5.00 each or $7.00 with rims.
or at Tonson, Inc. at 2050-112 Bunker Lake Blvd. fo~
$1.00 each.)
Residents are urged to start recycling now. No
amount of recyclable items is too small; it all helps
to reduce the flow into the landfill and all proceeds
from the recycling center are turned over to the
Ramsey Jaycees to be used for community service
projects.
In addition to the Jaycees proceeds, the City of
Ramsey can receive a $4 per ton reimbursement
from the State of Minnesota for any materials recycl-
ed within the City.

KEEP SAVING AND RECYCLING

THOSE NEWSPAPERS

Ramsey Boy Scout Troop #362 would like to take
this opportunity to thank all of those persons who
have donated newspapers to the troop; the support
is very much appreciated.
Troop #362 is requesting that Ramsey residents
continue to support their effort to raise funds by
recycling newspapers. You should also be aware
that the trailer used as a drop-off center for the
papers has been moved from LeTourneau's park-
mg lot to the west end of the Rum River Plaza Shop-
ping Center parking lot.

SAVE YOUR CANS

The students at Ramsey Elementary School col-
lected 2,393 pounds of cans during their can collec-
tion this spring. The money brought in through this
successful collection totaled $1,196.50. This will be
used to purchase additional software for students
and to up grade computer hardware.
The Ramsey students and staff appreciate the
support of their parents and the residents of the
community.
Watch for another collection in September. SAVE
YOUR CANS!

RAMSEY JAYCEES SELLING
PULL TABS AT BERG'S ICO
ON HWY. #10
Gas, oil, bread, milk, aspirin, candy bars, soda and
YES -- PULL TABS. The Lions have accomplished
a great deal for their community this year. The main
accomplishments that come to mind were:
· 1 st Annual Ramsey Lions Community
Fallfest at Rum River Plaza
· 2nd Annual Ramsey Community Picnic held
at Central Park
· $85.7K in contributions to our community,
Anoka County, and other Lions charities.
The main recipients for these funds were the
Central Park warming house that will be built
this summer ($50.0K), Ramsey community
picnic ($6.2K), Ramsey Elementary School
playground equipment ($5.0K), Anoka High
School Band equipment trailer ($1.0K),
Christmas toys and holiday food baskets for
Ramsey families in need ($2.3K), and the
Ramsey Senior Citizens Club, Boy Scouts,
and Cub Scouts ($3.3K).
These events and charitable donations have been
accomplished through the hard work of all of the
Ramsey Lions. However, the main accomplishment
achieved was the positive feeling of all Ramsey Lions
Club members knowing that they have helped and
served their community.
The Ramsey Lions Club would like to welcome
anyone wishing information about Lionism, or
wishing to join the Ramsey Lions Club, to call Lion
Jerry Hamlet (441-1630) or Lion Olaf Olson
(427-3169).

LANDFILL COMMISSION

SEEKING NEIGHBORHOODS

FOR PILOT WOOD

CHIPPING PROJECT

The Ramsey Landfill Commission is implementing
a plan for solid waste abatement in the City. Part of
this plan calls for removing materials such as waste
brush and tree branches from the waste stream cur-
rently being landfilled. The Landfill Commission is
~onsidering a o~e-day pilot wood chipping program
m a Ramsey neighborhood. The program includes
a wood chipping machine and operator that would
be provided through the City to residents in that
nei~hborhood. The .chips could t.hen be used by
reSidents for mulchmg, landscapmg, composting,
etc.

The Landfill Commission is interested in promoting
a wood chipping program in order to:

1. Encourage recycling or reuse of waste brush
and tree branches rather than landfilling them;
2. Encourage recycling or reuse of waste brush
and tree branches rather than burning them;
and
3. Promote timely and proper disposal of Oak Wilt
and Dutch Elm diseased brush.

The Landfill Commission will determine which
n~ighborhood will be selecte:d for the pilot wood chip-
pmg program based on neighborhood interest and
need.

If you are interested in a neighborhood wood chipp-
ing program, please fill out the form below and return
it to the Ramsey Municipal Center, 15153 Nowthen
Boulevard N.W.

Please consider this neighborhood for the
pilot wood chipping project.
I am interested in bringing wood brush to a
neighborhood wood chipping project.
I would like to use wood chips at my home.
Currently, my waste brush and tree branches are:
burned.
thrown into the garbage.
piled up in the yard.
other.
I don't have any waste brush or branches.

Name

Address

Phone
Thanks for your time and interest!

GYPSY

MOTH SURVEY
PROGRAM

Ramsey may be included in the area scheduled
for trapping as part of the Gypsy Moth Survey Pro-
gram this summer. The purpose of the program is
to detect a gypsy moth infestation at the earliest
possible stage, and it involves the placement of
triangular brown traps. The traps use a pheromone
lure to attract male gypsy moths and sticky
substance to hold them. They do not contain
pesticides or any toxic materials.
The trappers will be placing traps during June and
the first two weeks of July. They will return to check
the traps later in July, and in August the traps will
be removed. Please do not disturb traps, and con-
tact the Minnesota Department of Agriculture pro-
mptly if any are damaged or destroyed. Lost traps
will interfere with the effectiveness of the survey.

TIRED OF ALCOHOL
AFFECTING YOUR LIFE?
JOIN US.

RAMSEY A.A.

Tuesdays
Thursdays
Sundays
RAMSEY CITY HALL
LOWER LEVEL- REAR ENTRANCE

7:00 p.m.
8:00 p.m.
7:30 p.m.

RAMSEY ALANON Thursdays 8:00 p.m.
RAMSEY CITY HALL
LOWER LEVEL - REAR ENTRANCE

ADULT CHILDREN
OF ALCOHOLICS Thursdays 7:30 p.m.
RAMSEY CITY HALL
LOWER LEVEL - REAR ENTRANCE
