BUSINESS SCENE
What began as a sweat shop in the basement of
an Anoka creamery in 1983 has grown into a family
workout center located in Ramsey.
The Iron Works Gym had potential from the begin-
ning, but founder Curt Kummala wanted to find just
the right place for his business expansion. An ex-
tensive demographics study of the metro area led
Kummala to his long-time residence -- Ramsey!
Why? Iron Works' target market is the upper mid-
dle class blue and white collar workers and their
families. Kummala recognized the tremendous
population growth potential in Ramsey.
Now, what started as a 5,000 square foot facility
in 1983 on Sunfish Lake Blvd., moved into a 12,500
square foot facility across the street at 14100 Sun-
fish Lake Blvd. That facility soon expanded to 20,000
square feet with the addition of a pool and racquet
ball course. And it's not stopping there -- plans are
being considered to add another 5,000 square feet
to accommodate a nursery, cardio-vascular room
and pro shop.
The facility, managed by Mike Kopiecki, employs
4 full-time and 5 part-time instructors and boasts a
members of 1300 citizens and the Two River's
Physical Therapy Center.
According to Curt, he has not regretted locating
in Ramsey. He says "The friendly people of Ramsey
make it a great place to live and run a business."
DOGS, DOGS, DOGS

The City is constantly receiving complaints of dogs
being a nuisance. The most common complaint is
dogs 'running at large'. The City ordinance states
that dogs must be confined. In the country, where
there is more room, homeowners do like having a
pet, but they also must remember that they do have
neighbors and dogs running at large are most an-
noying. Again, we remind you to KEEP YOUR DOG
KENNELED OR ON A LEASH!
A WORD FROM YOUR

TREE INSPECTOR
By Bruce Bacon

Citizens, Happy New Year! This is the time of year
to prune unwanted branches from your shade trees.
Do you remember which trees you wanted to shape
for summer purposes? Which branches make a nar-
row fork that is liable to split as the tree matures?
You should really plan to have your pruning done
between now and April as trees, insects and disease
are dormant during this time of year. Red Oaks are
especially vulnerable to Oak Wilt in May and June
and should absolutely not be pruned during those
months. Note that undamaged bark is the tree's first
defense against infection. Like our skin, wounds
need to be treated and sealed against infection.
Many of you have inquired about what to do with
prunings and yard debris. We all know that landfill-
ing is expensive but did you know that Anoka County
maintains a site for disposal of diseased trees and
brush on Hanson Blvd. just north of Hwy. #242
(757-3920). You can reduce the debris mass con-
siderably by cutting up smaller branches and limbs
for firewood and campfires. If there is more than 600
feet to the nearest occupied dwelling, you can app-
ly for a PCA open burning permit. If you have a 'wild
zone' on your lot, you can compost brush, organic
household waste and organic yard waste.
Compost is a means of collecting and layering
organic debris so that it decomposes naturally into
a necessary and valuable soil additive. This can be
done fairly rapidly, in a year or less, if the material
is fine enough and turned from time to time. Brush
will take longer to decompose unless it is chipped.
In addition to adding the chips to your compost pile,
they can also be used as a mulch around young
trees or or landscaped paths. Look to the February
issue of the Ramsey Resident for more details on
composting.
If you would like to sponsor a neighborhood solu-
tion for tree disease control and correct, seasonal
maintenance practices, please feel free to call Bruce
Bacon at 753-5099 and leave a message.
