RAMSEY LIONS CLUB

October was Membership Growth and Retention
month. The Ramsey Lions Club inducted two new
members into Lions International - Lions Don
Enebak and Will Weiss. In addition, Curt Johnson
joined the Ramsey Lions Club at the end of the
month. We are pleased to welcome these three
Ramsey residents into Lionism.
The Ramsey Lions also made a major contribu-
tion to the Anoka High School Band to aid them in
obtaining their new trailer that will be used to
transport instruments and uniforms.
November also looks like a month with many ac-
tivities. We have several requests for donations that
will be addressed, commodity distribution in Anoka,
and Thanksgiving Food Baskets to be purchased
and distributed. This will be an enjoyable month.
RAMSEY STUDENTS RAISE

THOUSANDS IN RUN-A-THON

Students at Ramsey Elementary School raised
$13,774 for field trips and special programs with a
one hour Run-a-Thon Relay last month.
The Run-a-Thon consisted of a non-competitive
class relay in which students took turns running so
that one student was running for the entire hour.
Participants collected pledges for their participa-
tion in the activity, which was part of a physical
education unit on physical fitness. Teachers and
parents were involved in the activity as well as
students.
Each participant received a red ribbon and those
who earned $20 or more received special t-shirts.
Students who collected the most were Josh Kohl,
grade two, and Ryan Semanko, grade three.
The school staff thanks the following businesses
which donated prizes for the event: Burger King,
Anoka, McDonald's, Anoka, LeTourneau's Super
Valu, Ramsey, On the Green Restaurant, Ramsey,
Pizza Hut, Anoka, and M and L Liquors, Ramsey.
RAMSEY SENIORS

The Ramsey Seniors had their usual, monthly pot
luck luncheon on November 4th. Following the lun-
cheon, Mr. Milton Anderson of the Ramsey Lions
spoke to the group. The Lions are suggesting that
they would like to take the Seniors on a holiday trip
through Minneapolis and St. Paul to see the beautiful
holiday lights. The dates chosen by the Seniors for
the holiday trip is either December 9 or December
15, leaving from City Hall anytime after 3:00 p.m. The
final date, to be selected by the Lions, will be shared
with all senior citizen members in plenty of time to
plan on participating in the trip.
The Ramsey Seniors will meet again on the first
Wednesday in December for a potluck luncheon and
Christmas party. Everyone attending is requested to
also bring a gift - men for men and ladies for ladies.
There will also be door prizes.
If you are interested in joining the Ramsey Seniors
or would like more information, call Dorothy Scrog-
gins at 421-4414.
STATUS OF OAK WILT AND

GYPSY MOTH IN

ANOKA COUNTY

In June, a gypsy moth infestation was detected
in Oak Grove Township. Control was not practical
at that point, so personnel from the Minnesota
Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Department
of Agriculture collected data on the size of the gyp-
sy moth population. Burlap larval traps were used
early in the season, followed by pheromone traps to
catch adult male moths. The area was surveyed for
new egg masses at the end of August. The infested
area appears to be smaller than 30 acres, and the
population density is till too low to produce any
observable damage to trees and shrubs.
The infestation will probably receive an eradica-
tion treatment in the spring of '88. The exact acreage
to be sprayed and the insecticide of choice are still
under consideration. The local news media will carry
official notice of public hearings this fall or winter.
Oak wilt is the pressing issue at this time. The in-
cidence of the disease is increasing due to rapid
residential development in Anoka County. Good
media coverage this year has intensified citizen sup-
port and requests for help to control oak wilt. In
response, the Anoka County Soil & Water Conser-
vation District and Extension Service have teamed
up with the Minnesota Departments of ,Agriculture
and Natural Resources to initiate an Oak Wilt Con-
trol and Reforestation Pilot Program.
Training workshops for tree inspectors, educa-
tional meetings for the public, and sale of 100,000
tree seedlings are being planned for this winter and
next spring. The goal of this program is to standar-
dize control recommendations, organize local citizen
support, and offer low cost trees to replace diseas-
ed oaks.
