ANOKA COUNTY
NEWS RELEASE

More Anoka County women, infants and children
will receive WIC benefits due to legistation passed
this spring. The Minnesota legislature appropriated
an additional $1 million over the next two years to
the program.
Although WIC has been highly successful in
Anoka County, many potentially eligible women are
not currently participating in the program, according
to Peggy Heaver, MPH, RD, supervisor of the Anoka
County WIC program. Good nutrition is especially
important in pregnancy. Heaver noted studies show-
ing that a proper diet during pregnancy can mean
a healthier baby at birth and fewer health problems
as the child grows up.
The Anoka County WIC program is currently in-
volved in an outreach effort inspired by a 1986 Min-
nesota law, which calls for an increase of 10 percent
a year in the percentage of participants who are
pregnant.
More than 2,000 people in Anoka County par-
ticipate in the WIC program, which has been
operating in Minnesota since 1974. In addition to
pregnant women, eligible WIC participants can in-
clude nursing mothers, infants, and children up to
age five who meet criteria set by WIC.
Coupons are issued to paricipants and are used
to buy milk, cheese, eggs, juice and cereal or infant
formula. WIC participants also receive free nutrition
assessments, diet counseling and nutrition educa-
tion. The goal of the program is to promote the
development of healthy babies and small children
by helping families make wise food choices.
Heaver says a number of studies have confirmed
that the program has a significant impact on the
health of mothers and children who participate. In
particular, it has been found that pregnant women
participating in WIC have fewer premature and low
birth weight babies. They are also more likely to
begin prenatal care early in their pregnanices, and
are less likely to have stillbirths. Children who par-
ticipate in WIC tend to have better memories and
larger vocabularies. WIC participants and their
families tend to have better diets than
non-participants.
Heaver notes that WIC is an equal opportunity pro-
gram. Persons who believe they have been
discriminated against because of race, color, na-
tional origin, age, sex or handicap should write im-
mediately to the Secretary of Agriculture,
Washington, D.C. 20250.
program, call 422-7055.
BUSINESS SCENE

By: Ramsey Economic Development Commission
Many residents are not aware of the growth of
Ramsey's commercial and industrial base, nor are
they aware of the achievements of the business com-
munity. Because of this, the Economic Development
Commission has established a Publicity Subcommit-
tee for the purpose of increasing public awareness
of accomplishments in the business community. This
is the first in a series of feature articles that will report
on business activities.
ARMSTRONG KENNELS - GAME FAIR
Chuck and Loral!. Delaney hosted the 6th annual
Game Fair at their Armstrong Kennels located in
Wolters. Some of the internationally recognized par-
ticipants were shooting champion John Satterwhite,
world famous archer Ann Clark and Tony Parnell,
trainer of retrievers for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth
II. Game Fair is an outdoor event for the entire fami-
ly with 3.4 million square feet of shooting ranges,
wildlife and conservation exhibits, archery and even
a lake for live fish and game demonstrations. It hap-
pens every year around Labor Day and it's only in
ANNIVERSARY
On August 14, 1987, Mate Punch and Die hosted
an open house to celebrate 25 years in business.
ment. Mr. Buckner presented Nils Sundquist, Presi-
dent of Mate Punch and Die, with a certificate from
Governor Rudy Perpich proclaiming August 14 as
'Nils E. Sundquist Day' in Minnesota.
In 1971, Sundquist moved into a 15,000 square
foot building at it's present location in Ramsey.
Three years later, the plant was expanded to 30,000
square feet and again in 1978, it was expanded and
WASTE MANAGEMENT OF MINNESOTA, INC.
Ramsey's Keep America Beautiful Program has
racked up awards for one of the program's sponsors,
Waste Management of Minnesota, Inc. Waste
Management of Minnesota will receive a 1987 award
for excellence in community relations for the com-
pany's participation in Ramsey's program. The
award will be presented by Waste Management of
North America, Waste Management of Minnesota's
parent company. Waste Management of Minnesota,
led by Terry Miller, helped organize Ramsey's Keep
America Beautiful Week projects, held April 26 - May
2. Activities included family clean-up projects, road-
side clean-ups, an anti-littering campaign and pro-
clamations by the City Council and Governor Rudy
Perpich. Waste Management of Minnesota is one of
six companies selected for the award. More than 300
Waste Management companies, located in 37 states
and Canada, competed for the award. Waste
Management of Minnesota also won a community
relations award presented by Waste Management's
Wisconsin/Minnesota District.
mission would like to take this opportunity to en-
courage everybody to mark October 11 on their
calendars and attend the "Discover Ramsey
Business Expo". The expo is designed to let
residents in our area know of the businessess we
have, what they sell, what employment opportunities
there are and just how viable and valuable the
