RAMSEY SENIOR
CITIZENS

The Ramsey Senior Citizens met for their regular
monthly potluck dinner meeting on June 3rd. A good
crowd was in attendance; the club took in three new
members.
Jack Kirchner representing the Ramsey Lions
Club was present to explain the Community Picnic
planned for Sunday, June 14 and the concert the
Lions are sponsoring for the seniors on June 15.
Joyce Paul, a former Anoka teacher entertained
the club with a number of readings which were en-
joyed by all.
The seniors will be meeting again on Wednesday,
July 1 for a potluck dinner at 12:00 noon in the Senior
Citizens Room in the lower level of Ramsey City Hall.
For more information, call Dorothy Scroggins at
SAFE DRIVING

Apparently, many persons are confused about, or
just plain haven't read signs abouUhe speed zones
on Ramsey Blvd. Whenever we work radar on that
highway, the speeds are averaging 54 to 56 mph and
that, dear drivers, is 4 to 6 mph over the speed limit
for 90% of the entire road. I believe one of three
states of mind exist here to give us this average:

1) You haven't seen the rather large, obvious
signs which notify drivers that the speed limit
is 50 mph from County Road #5 (Nowthen
Blvd.) to County Road #116 (Industry Blvd.).
If you haven't seen them, and they have
been there for years, look! They are taller,
albeit skinnier than any child and have a
stark black and white head. If you can't see
the signs, how will you see the pedestrians?
2) You know the limit is 50 but, (A) your
speedometer is off because of the wrong
gear in the tranny; (B) you have mounted
radically different size tires on the rear of
your car and they create a wrong reading;
(C) your speedometer is broken; or (D) be-
ing human, you just plain get carried away
listening to the FM stereo (Bolero- adults,
Led Zeppelin - kids) and you don't watch the
meter.
3) You jolly well realize how fast you are go-
ing but are of the "bull-buffalo" mentality
that says, "What? You mean there are other
people in this world than myself."

I am empathetic with the first two because we all
stray sometimes and our speeding is not really in-
tentional. A citation from the gendarmes is the little
whack on the back of the head that wakes us up (a
Mille Lacs County deputy jerked my chain awhile
back and now my checkbook whimpers at the county
line)..
The third one, the "bull-buffalo", has no excuse
and generally has a lengthy record of violations.
Happiness is tagging a "BB"!
For all of you who use Ramsey Blvd., remember
the speed limit is 50 for all but about the last mile
on the highway #10 end.

PLEASE 50 50 50 50 50 50 etc.

You will also note that on Nowthen Blvd., Sunfish
Lake Blvd. and Ramsey Blvd. there are equally large,
visible signs which prohibit driving on the shoulders
of those highways (bicycles are permitted however).
The shoulder is that paved portion of the highway
to the right of the solid white line, except where there
are marked Right Turn Lane signs. Where there are
marked and signed right turn lanes, you can drive
into those lanes only for the purpose of making a
right turn. You cannot pass using the area to the
right of the aforementioned shoulder line. Now, if
everybody drove reasonably and we didn't have
those "bull-buffalos" trampling down the highways,
those lanes may have never been put off limits to
passing. But, for too many drivers the instant they
see the left turn signal of the vehicle ahead come
on, they maintain their 50 or 55 mph and instantly
wrench over to the right to pass the turning vehicle,
thereby saving 10 seconds of time, a micromeasure-
ment of brake pad and, perhaps, a thimble full of
gasoline. Never mind that a pedestrian or bicyclist
may be using the paved shoulder and is screened
from view of the passer by the left turning car!
Bicyclists and pedestrians use these paved
shoulders and do so expecting a degree of safety.
DON'T DRIVE ON THE PAVED SHOULDERS.
Shortly after this reminder is published, we are go-
ing to start tagging for this violation.
