With
a crushing sadness, they will arise from their desks,
leave their beloved books, cast longing glances at
the assignment boards, say farewell to their now
forlorn teachers and go forth to face the hot sun,
beaches, parks, ball games, socializing, etc., etc.!
Actually, what we will witness at the first "ring"
will resemble the result of someone yelling
"SNAKE" at a reptileophobic convention. A thunder-
ing, cheering herd will burst forth to experience
another blessedly breezy, beautiful summer vaca-
tion. To parents, it is Tennessee William's "Long Hot
Summer' in a continuous showing. To ice cream,
pop, swimsuit and a wide variety of other retail sales
folks, it is the three month Valhalla they have waited
for all winter. To the Police Department, it is a time
for establishing warm relationships warm relation-
ships and lasting, loving memories of socializing with
exuberant youths and their cars, motorcycles, three
wheelers, bicycles, skateboards, roller skates,
Reeboked feet and other exotic means of
locomotion.
That brings us to the subject of summertime safety.
Come Fall, that "thundering herd" will be rounded
up, reclothed, washed up and returned to their
respective halls of learning. Do you suppose it is
possible that we could make this a year when the
head count will be the same returning as when they
left? Maybe, with a high level of parental guidance
(nagging!), they will all march back sporting the pro-
per number of fingers and toes and with a minimum
of bruises or broken bones.
First, and foremost, in the area of safety is the in-
teraction between kids and streets. Bicycles are
great means of transportation but they share a rib-
bon of pavement with much larger and faster cousins
-- cars and trucks, and therefore must be ridden pro-
perly if accidents are to be avoided.
RULES!!! (Parents - Please relay these rules
to your kids)

PEDESTRIANS:

1. Don't PLAY in the streets; walk on them,
facing traffic and near the left hand edge.
Ride on and cross streets (carefully) but
DON'T PLAY ON THEM!
2. When walking on streets at night, wear
light colored clothing and if you frequently
walk at night, have a reflective strip of
cloth sewn onto a shirt or jacket.

u..,

ALCOHOLISM.
A FAMILY DISEASE!
TRY ALANON

RAMSEY CITY HALL Thursdays 8:00 p.m.
Lower Level, Rear Entrance

3. Parents/Sitters - Don't allow ditches or
road edges to become sandboxes or
Tonka Toy construction sites for the
young ones. Not only do cars sometimes
stray off to the road shoulders but kids get
so involved in their play they sometimes
forget where they are and jump up sud-
denly and gambol around like a BunRab.
It's beautiful to watch that sheer, innocent
joy of living but not on a roadway. Pro-
tect them!

BIKERS:

1 . Ride with traffic and stay to the right side
of the street, close to the road edge.
When you look back to check for traffic
behind you, keep in mind that when you
turn your head to the left you will also tend
to veer your bike to the left and into the
path of other traffic. Be aware that this
happens and use caution when looking
behind you.
2. Stop at stop signs and at intersections
that have no control signs; look carefully.
before pulling out. If you feel at all in-
secure about riding your bike across the
street, push it!
3. DO NOT RIDE DOUBLE!!! When you
double up on a bicycle, you lose stability
and good control. Your passenger's
movements can cause a sudden swerv-
ing motion that you don't expect.
4. Equip your bike with proper reflectors and
a light for night riding. When riding at
night, wear light colored clothing.
5. On streets without paved shoulders, ride
single file instead of side-by-side.
6. Have good working brakes and wear
shoes when riding (I have found bare toes
caught in the most unlikely and painful
places).
7. PARENTS - keep your child off the streets
until you can definitely see that he or she
can control the bike with reasonable skill.

YOUR ELECTED OFFICIALS

COUNTY COMMISSIONER
District No. 1
Natalie Haas-Steffen
325 East Main Street
Anoka, MN 55303
c/o Administration
Anoka County Courthouse
421-4760, etx. 1171

ST ATE LEGISLATORS
District No. 50
Senator Greg Dahl
Room 111, State Capitol
St. Paul, MN 55155
296-5003

District No. SOA
Rep. SPEED KILLS! -If not you, then someone
else. Follow the speed limits because
they are not arbitrary figures someone
pulled out of a hat. A lot of careful thought
and statistical study has gone into deter-
mining a speed limit and when you ex-
ceed it, you are playing games with the
safety of yourselves and others.
2. When you are driving a car, your #1 priori-
ty is the actual act of driving - not the
stereo, not your passengers, not your Big
Mac and fries, not your daydreams about
an upcoming party, etc.
3. If you are going to DRINK (and I hope you
are smart enough not to, but that's
another subject at another time), don't
DRIVE!!! If you find yourself in a difficult
position at a gathering and nobody is safe
to drive, call your parents; call a friend;
call a cab; stay where you are (don't walk
home); but please DON'T DRIVE. Two
kinds of arrests can occur when drinking
and driving: Police Arrest and Cardiac Ar-
rest (after impact). The first one is our job,
the second IS the coroner's.
4. BUCKLE UP - That way, even if you are
suddenly struck with a case of severe
stupidity (a condition that afflicts all of us
at some time or other), you have a good
chance of living through the conse-
quences. Insist that your friends buckle
up when they are riding in your car. For
you amorous ones, remember, there is a
lap belt for the spot right next to the
driver.

I have only touched on the major areas of Sum-
mer Safety. There are many, many more such as
swimming, boating, sports and so on, but I'm sure
that you readers are near to the eye-rolling "won't
he ever quit?" stage that my kids display at lecture
time. I just hope that some of this receives some
serious thought and has sunk in. The kids may not
like to hear that first-period bell in September, but
at least their chance of being there to hear it will be
greater if they make an effort to follow these rules.

Thanks.
