This is the season when the wilt fungus is most
virulent and spores can colonize, especially in the
Red Oaks.
If you have wilting oaks, the sap from the dead
and dying trees can pass through overlapping roots
of adjoining oaks and infect them. These "root
grafts" must be interrupted by trenching 20"-30"
deep to prevent spore transfer through the sap or
adjoining trees must be cut to sanitize a zone of
transfer.
The Minnesota Extension Service at 550 Bunker
Lake Blvd. has pamphlets available entitled "Oak
Wilt" that you can obtain free of charge by calling
755-1280. The City has also ordered a supply of
pamphlets entitled "Oak Wilt In Minnesota" and
those should be available at City Hall by the end of
May.
Our neighbors, ourselves and future citizens of
Ramsey will have us to thank or wonder about. Our
tree decisions today are shaping Ramsey's urban
forest 40, 80 years down the road. Our time, our
cooperation, our money, our knowledge and sun-
earth energy are the interacting web of culture and
ecology that are shaping tommorrow's forests.

YOUR LEAVES
tuUl yOUll 9'UlM
clipfJUtg~f

~

There's value to your fallen leaves and grass clip-
pings when you bring them free of charge to the
Bunker Hills Composting Site.
Composting yard waste reduces the burden on
landfills. Currently up to 30% of residential waste
hauled to landfills each spring, summer and fall is
leaves and grass. Bring this yard waste to Bunker
Hills instead and save the extra cost some garbage
haulers may charge for additional bags.
Composting creates a valuable resource by
naturally turning yard waste into humus, a dark ear-
thy part of the soil. Compost is an excellent soil con-
ditioner. As mulch, it discourages weed growth and
reduces watering needs. Compost made at Bunker
Hills will be free to Anoka County residents. It should
be available for your home gardening use as early
as next fall.
IT'S EASY TO COMPOST!

Simply bring your leaves and grass clippings to
the composting site. Dump the yard waste and take
your containers or bags home again. Please do not
bring brush, branches or garbage. Diseased trees
can be brought to this site for a nominal fee (no
stumps, please).
If you have any questions, please call the Anoka
County Parks Department, 757-3920. You can also
call this number next fall to check on the availability
of free compost.
CENTRALLY LOCATED

The Bunker Hills Composting Site is open from April
1 - November 1.
Hours:
Saturdays. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .9 A.M. - 5 P.M.
Sundays. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . noon - 5 P.M.
Mondays. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . noon ~ 7:30 P.M.
Wednesdays............... . noon - 7:30 P.M.
Fridays. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . noon - 7:30 P.M.

II 3~$"
~ Bunker Lake Blvd.

t

(.e
t>~
,<
~~

~
E

.-"

131'" Ave

*~
Composting
Site

t

No,'h
I

.!
E
'"Ii
> j
iij
c
~

~ Hw. 242

.....
