RAMSEY JAYCEES AID MDA

~ .

Last weekend, the Ramsey Area Jaycees collected $812.73 in donations for the Muscular Dystrophy Associa-
tion from passing motorists at the intersection of Anoka County Road 116 and 57. They were a part of the
1986 statewide Minnesota Jaycees "Roadblock" to benefit MDA. Across the state, over 100 chapters par-
ticipated in this project.
The money raised will help support MDA's programs of medical services and research to aid over one
thousand Minnesota families. MDA seeks cures or effective treatments for 40 neuromuscular diseases that
affect nearly one million Americans. In 1986 over $300,000 in research grants will be funded by MDA at
the University of Minnesota and Rochester's Mayo Clinic.
The Jaycees is a young person's leadership training organization whose belief is that "Service to Humani-
ty is the Best Work of Life". To learn more about the Jaycees, please contact Karen Bush at 421-3562.
The Ramsey Jaycees would like to thank everyone who they met at the Voluntary Toll for their courteous
and generous support. They also wish to thank Mike Auspos, the Ramsey Police Department, Ralph "Buster"
Talbot and the Anoka County Sheriff's Department for their cooperation. Special thanks to Paul Ruud, Anoka
County Engineer for his instrumental part in conducting this project.
POISONOUS SNAKES

SITED IN RAMSEY
On July 12, 1986 a local resident was bitten by
a Copperhead snake in the vicinity of 149th and
Peridot. At the time, the resident logically did not an-
ticipate that it could have been a poisonous bite.
When he returned to his residence he began to feel
light-headed and noticed a tingling sensation in the
area of the wound. Closer inspection of the wound
revealed that the top of the wound had two punc-
ture marks centrally positioned between two red,
scratchy marks; the bottom of the wound showed
two more red, scratchy marks. Fortunately for the
victim, he knew immediately that this bite pattern is
indicative of poison.ous snakes. He immediately went
to Mercy Medical Center and received appropriate
treatment.
Poison Control informs us that poisonous snake
bites are not uncommon in Minnesota. There is a
species of Rattler that can be found along the river
bluffs south of the Twin Cities; snake collectors often
fall prey to their pets; and Copperheads do make it
into Minnesota via fruit and vegetable trucks com-
ing from the southern United States.
Poison Control strongly cautions against relying
on symptoms (incessant bleeding, light-headedness,
tingling sensation in area of wound) to determine
whether or not you have been bitten by a poisonous
snake. Persons should seek medical attention or call
Poison Control (347-3141) immediately.
