I I l I Throughout the country, police and neighborhoods are working more closely together - they're sending a message that says, "Hey, you're.not going to do that in our neighbor- hood!" _ The above quote from the FBI followed the news that crime was down by 7%. Citizen involvement works! You and your family can pro- tect yourselves. And, you' and other citizens can protect your neighborhood and your community. Why should you get involved? There are about 40 million crimes committed each year in this country. Measured in money, this amounts to nine billion dollars a year. In Andover alone, from 100 to 150 burglaries are reported each year. It is estimated that only half of the occurring burglaries were reported to the proper authorities. You may have heard that we are doing something about crime prevention in the City of Andover through the Key Communicator/Crime Prevention Project. This is how the Key Communicator Project works: Neighborhood meetings are held in Andover sponsored by Crooked Lake Community School and the Anoka County Sheriff's Department. A community member hosts the meet- ing in their home and invites their neighbors. The meetings begin at 7 p.m. and usually last until 9 p.m. The Community School Coordinator and a deputy from the Sheriff's Depart- ment conduct the meeting. The following are examples of topics covered. · You will not only receive information on how to better secure your home against burglary, you will also learn how to work with your neighbors and police in making your area a safer place. Many burglaries are committed in houses that are easily entered. Sometimes neighbors witness a burglary and do not even know it. . ., You will learn how to sign up for Operation 10 in order. to protect your home against burglery. Operation 10 also helps in the recovery of stolen articles. · An opportunity is available for you to make an appoint- ment with an officer to come to your home at your conveni- ence to recommend inexpensive methods of improving the security of your home. Each home is different and requires different types of security measures. This opportunity allows you to have recommendations made that are unique to your home. · A communication network to get information out to. each member in the neighborhood will be set up and ex- plained at the meeting. · You will have the opportunity to ask questions about Sheriff's Depar.tment procedures and operations. For exam- ple: how to call in suspicions and what the -follow up pro- cedures are when a burglary is involved. We are encouraging you to watch out for your neighbor, we call this simply, "Neighborhood Watchforce". This is the most effective crime prevention method there is. -. A packet of materials concerning crime prevention will be given to each family. · This is a good opportunity for you and your neighbors to get together to meet each other and renew acquaint- ances. The Key Communicator Project provides the organ- ization for you to do so. This is a subject that applies to everyone and effects everyone. Through this project we set up a communication network between your neighborhood, the Community School Coordinator, and the Sheriff's Department. Watch for a neighborhood meeting to be held in your area. It could be the most valuable meeting that you attend. If you would like to host a meeting in your home and invite your neighbors, please fill out the attached form. Either drop it off or mail it to the address given below. The council gives direction and evaluates community edu- cation classes and activities and community projects such as the Key Communicator Pro- gram. They sponsor fund rais- ers in order to give financial support to community pro- jects, school needs, and special efforts such as the construction of a skating rink and warming house' near Crooked Lake. This group also provides a good opportunity , for you to meet other Andover residents who are also part of this fun, worthwhile organiza- tion. The council meets the se- cond Monday of each month (Sept.-May) at 7:30 p.m. at Crooked Lake. School. Come join us!
