They were a part of the
1985 state wide Minnesota
Jaycees' "Roadblock" to
benefit M DA. Across the state
over 100 chapters participated

in this project.
The money raised will help
support MDA's programs of
medical services and research
to aid over one thousand Min-
nesota families. MDA seeks
cures or effective treatments
for 40 neuromuscular diseases
that affect nearly one million
Americans. In 1985 over
$300,000 in research grants
will be funded by MDA at the
University of Minnesota and
Rochester's Mayo Clinic.

Ramsey Senior
.Citizen Club

't

The Ramsey Senior Citizens business meeting is followed
Club meets the first Wednes- up by card games, bingo or
day of each month in the lower some other form of entertain-
level of Ramsey Municipal ment. This
brings people together and in-
creases international under-
standing. It also allows for
greater development of char-
acter and outlook on life.
Shiho commented that
among her Minnesota favor-
ites were McDonald's ham-
burgers and the amusement
rides at the Anoka County Fair.

In Minnesota, through the
Labo - 4-H exchange program,
is 14 year old Shiho Segawa
from Karuizawa, Japan. Shiho
was hosted by the Wes Roche
family, members of the Cheer-
ful Chuggers 4-H Club in Ram-
sey. A special friendship has
developed between the Roche
and Segawa families as three
years ago the older Segawa
daughter, Kana, stayed with
the Roches.
The goal of Labo is "to pro-
mote understanding of differ-
ent cultures through learning
their languages, and to teach

DRIVE LIKE
SCHOOL CHILDBEN'S
.LlVIS OBI!.,

FIRE DRlW
SAVE LNES!

Mayor's State of the City Report

Continued from page 5

tional vehicles. However, their
use becomes a problelTl to the
City when residents violate
their neighbors' rights (tres-
passing, noise, etc.) If resi-
dents police themselves; the
City can avoid adopting laws
which are costly to enforce.
MEDIA EVENTS
The City currently uti I izes
the Anoka County Union
which is published weekly as
its official newspaper. The
Union contains all legal notic-
es including public hearings,
meeting notices, etc. The City
newsletter, published bi-
monthly, is the Tri-City News-
letter. We still seem to have
problems reaching all resi-
dents on issues and happen-
ings in the City. We have one
other vehicle available to the
residents and that is Cable
T.V. We can use the govern-
ment channel to air City Coun-
cil and commission meetings.
The City would have no cost in
providing this service, but resi-
dents would have to pay any
household installation and
subscription costs. Accord-
ingly, I would like to have your
comments on the City provid-
ing this service.
CONCLUSION
I thoroughly enjoy the op-
portunity that you, the resi-
dents of Ramsey, are giving
me to serve as your mayor. I
can assure you that I will con-
tinue to work hard on your be-
half. I am also' sure that you
will not always agree with my
decisions. However, I will be
acting in what I believe to be
the best interests of the entire
City. I recognize that my deci-
sions will be considered good
by some and bad by others. As
is usually the .case with sub-
jective decisions, it depends
on whose ox is gored.

faCility (Site P, adjacent to the
present landfill operation) in
Ramsey. We are working very
hard to ensure that the de-
velopment of Site P is not a
reality.
3) Drainage: As you have
read in the papers, neighbor-
ing communities are also suf-
fering from terrific drainage
problems. Some of this is due
to the cyclical nature of pre-
cipitation patterns, but much
is also due to increased de-
velopment in the City. As more
development occurs, the
ground can absorb less water
and greater runoff occurs. As a
result, water collects in areas
where it is normally high and
dry. The resolution to this pro-
blem will be the construction
of storm sewers and/or ditch-
es to protect residents and
normally high property. How-
ever, final approval for this
construction remains in your
hands, the Citizens of
Ramsey.
4). Dogs and Zoning: The Ci-
ty is receiving complaints re-
garding dogs running at large
and residents in violation of
the City's "nuisance" ordin-
ances. The solution to these
problems is that residents are
going to have to police them-
selves. It is usually evident
when we are violating our
neighbors' rights by subtract-
ing from the value of their
neighborhood when we use
our yards as garbage dumps.
As with any problem that in-
volves neighbors, it is some-
times easier to bite your
tongue and be quiet. However,
without your involvement and
help, reasonable solutions
cannot be achieved.
5) Snowm.obiles, Three
Wheelers, Dirt Bikes, etc.:
These types of vehicles when
used properly are fine recrea-

.
