STARTING A BUSINESS?
If you are considering start-
ing a business, you should be
aware of a publication by the
Minnesota Department of
Energy and Economic Devel-
opment entitled "A Guide To
Starting A Business In Minne-
sota". The guide provides a
concise summary of the major
issues faced by anyone start-
ing and operating a small busi-
ness in Minnesota. The guide
answers questions most fre-
quently directed to the Secre-
tary of State, the Department
of Revenue, and the Depart-
ment of Energy and Economic
Development. It explains, in
simple terms, such things as
choosing the form of business
organization, incorporating,

r-

filing a business name, obtain-
ing business licenses and per-
mits, developing a business
plan, and obtaining business
loans. It also provides a good
checklist of issues that relate
to employee benefits and ac-
counting procedures. The
guide also provides a compre-
hensive listing of sources of
business information and
assistance, such as state and
federal programs, educational
programs and business semin-
ars, and professional services
provided by accountants and
attorneys. You may obtain a
free copy of this publication
by contacting the Minnesota
Department of Energy and
Economic Development, 900
American Center Building, 150
East Kellogg Blvd., St. Paul,
MN 55101 or by calling 296-
3871.
ANOKA PLANNING
COMMISSION PROCEDURES
With the summer construc-
tion season underway, the City
of Anoka would like to make it
known that applying for
development permits through
the Planning Commission is
not a difficult process. It
begins with an idea or concept
of change being discussed
with the Community Develop-
ment Department. Such an ap-
proach ensures the applicants
that they have considered all
the possible angles of the'
development.
If a special approval is re-
quired, as in the case ot- a
variance, conditional use, or
subdivision, the applicant
must appear before the Plan-
ning Commission (meets on
the first Tuesday of every
month). Decisions of the Plan-
ning Commission are finalized
by the City Council on the
third Monday of each month.
Please remember that the
length of time needed to re-
view the application, make a
planning staff report, prepare
a presentation, public notices,
and present the applications
to the Planning Commission
-and City Council takes less
than a month. To ensure the
continuation of this efficient
process, please submit ade-
quate plans, feel free to re-
quest an update on your pro-
ject's status, or seek addi-
tional information.
The persons to contact with
questions on this procedure or
development inquiries in
general are: Robert Kirchner,
Community Development
Di rector 421-6630, extension
134 or Kirk Corson, City Plan-
ner 421-6630, extension 183.
