Bas-

ed on phone calls and con-
tracts with residents, services
provided by the City are quite
satisfactory. The Council is
constantly striving to maintain
services to the citizens
without substantially increas-
ing taxes; an effort which has
been achieved for the past
several years.

RESIDENTS
This is "Your" Pap'er

In an effort to better meet the needs of you, the Andover
- resident, we are.requesting your input an,d suggestions for
informational articles you would like to see in this paper. After re-
cruiting volunteers, extensive
training, and acquiring equip-
ment housed in a small
quonset hut next to the City
Hall, the Department started
responding to fires in Andover
in April 1979, at first in con-
junction with the Anoka Fire
Department.
In 1979 the residents ap-
proved a $480,000 bond issue
for the construction of a fire
department/public works ,
building on the City Hall site .:1
and ,two fire trucks. Because a -
majority of the City has private
wells, the Fire Department is
equipped to carry water to
even the most serious fire
situations. At the present
time, the Department has two
pumpers of 1,000 g.p.m., three
tankers and a grass rig and can
carry a total of 7,375 gallons of
water to' a fire scene if need,
be. They-also have mutual aid
agreements with 19 other
north suburban departments
for additional aid if necessary.
Fire fighters respond to an
average of 115 runs per year. 'In
1984 they were called to 10
structure fires, 12 chimney'
fires, 21 grass and brush fires,
9 auto fires, 8 extractions from
auto accidents, 6 electrical, 8
mutual aids to other depart-
ments, 13 calls of good inten-
'tion, plus 37 miscellaneous
calls.

-.4W'

.... -.. .,"
---'~

Approximately 35 residents
are volunteer fire fighters. In
addition to responding to fire
calls, they do extensive train-
ing several times a month.
They also organize at least one
major fund raiser a year to 'ac-
quire additional equipment for
the Department. This year they
will again be organizing the
Andover Fun Days activities at
the Fire Station. Volunteers
also provide services to the
community by teaching CPR
and first aid classes and pro-
viding instruction to the
children at the schools on fire
prevention.
In 1982 a,rescue service was
established by the Depart-
ment. Specially trained
volunteers respond to medical
emergencies within Andover

. "U:\!
1M _ ~___ ~

weekdays from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
and at all times on the
weekends. A new rescue vehi-
cle was acquired in 1984
which is equipped to give aid
for medical emergencies. The
rescue team does not trans-
port to the hospitals but pro-
vides the m'ost immediate aid
in an emergency situation.Ap-
proximately 16 volunteers res-
pond to an average of 50 calls
a year.
The Department is constant-
ly striving to improve response
times and service to the resi-
dents. It is felt this service can
be improved with the con-
struction of a substation in the
northwestern portion of the Ci-
ty, though this is still being
researched by the Depart-
ment.

. JUNE
. IS
RECREATION
MONTH

Dogs
Dogs
Dogs

If you were one of the own-
ers of a dog(s) picked up last
month by the Animal Control
people, you know exactly how
costly it was to redeem that
animal. If you are allowing
your dog to run at large, those
'costs could be your respon-
sibility next time. This is still
the No. 1 complaint received
at City Hall. '

Committee Forming

Would you like to play an ac-
tive part in the development of
the City of Andover?
A committee is being form-
ed to review, make recommen-
dations, and to contact pros-
pective commercial develop-
ers and businesses interested
in locating in the City of An-
dover. There are several

financing and assistance
vehicles available to cities to
attract business; however, the
contacts must be made to let
the commercial trades know
what services will be offered.
If you are interested. please
send a brief resume to Mayor
Jerry Windschitl at the C lJ
Hall.

~~~~' ~~ ~~' ...... ...~ ...... ~ ...
", r r r~,..~,..~ r- ,..~
![
CITY OF
ANDOVER
FACT SHEET
POPULATION
10,368 (April 1984)
10,650 (1985 estimate)
HOUSING UNITS
2,774 (April 1984)
3,020 (1985 estimale)
STREETS
139 miles
.
