Crime Prevention
C,ommunityBlock .Watch

For the past two years, the
City of Anoka has been active-
ly involved through communi-
ty schools and the Police De-
partment in the implementa-
tion of a Community Block
Watch program in the Wilson
School area. '
The Community Block
Watch program is a system by
which neighborhood meetings
are held at selected individual
homes in order to promote
crime prevention. A "Key Com-
municator" or Block Watch
Person In Charge is selected
.from a neighborhood as a con-
tact person between the pro-

BEWARE OF

gram coordinator and the
neighborhood or block that
person lives in. The program is
intended to get people in
neighborhoods to know each
other and look out for each
other. It encourages people to
call the police when some-
thing looks strange or out of
place in the neighborhood or if
they observe what they believe
might be criminal activity.
Since the inception of this
program in the Wilson school
area, a reduction of burglary
and vandalism incidents has
occurred. This is believed t6

be directly related to crime
prevention. The City Council
recently approved the continu-
ed funding of this program to
extend it into the Lincoln Com-
munity School area this fall.
After the Lincoln area is com-
pleted, it will be extended into
the rest of the City.
, A POLICE DEPARTMENT
BY ITSELF CANNOT PRE-
VENT CRIME. WE MUST
HAVE COMMUNITY SUPPORT
AND COOPERATION. TO-
GETHER WE CAN REDUCE
THE POTENTIAL FOR CER-
TAIN TYPES OF CRIMES.
