Key Communicator/
Crime Prevention Program
is growing in Andover

Key Communicator/Crime
Prevention is an exciting com-
munity program where neigh'
bors get together to deal with
common concerns and in-
terests. Fu nded by the City of
Andover, this program has
already impacted nearly 200
families and is growing rapid-
ly. Persons attending neigh.
borhood meetings learn val-
uable' crime prevention stra-
tegies from Anoka County
Sheriff's Department depu-
. ties and become part of a
. neighborhood watch force to
spot suspicious activities and
report them immediately to
the sheriff's department.
Key Comm~nicators in
each neighborhood help
maintain a two-way flow of
communication between the

city. school district. sheriff's
department, and the people
living in their neighborhood.
They are kept abreast of re-
cent crime in the area through
. bi-monthly bulletins ~nd
,crime reports. Many ques-
tions Andover ,residents have
concerning city services, city
ordinances, community ac-.
tivities, etc., may now be
answered through the Key
Communicator communica-
tion network.
If you receive an invitation
to a neighborhood meeting,
please attend. If the program
has not yet reached your area,
call Melanie Deluca (Key
Communicator program coor-
dinator) at 757-5800 and ex-
press your interest. Help
unlock your neighborhood's
potential!
Polish papercutting craft' among
classes planned at Crooked lake
. School this spring .

Wycinanki, the old hard-
ti mes papercLJtti ng craft from
19th Century Poland will be
one of the adult courses held
'this spring at Crooked Lake
Community School. Students
enrolled in the course will
learn to make pictures and
cards using layers of colored
paper. '
Crooked Lake is very for-
tunate to have Katie Richie
teaching this course. Katie
learned her craft several years
ago from Magdalena Swider-
ski, a polish artist. She now
sells her artwork, including
playing cards. Miss Richie
has exhibited her work at the
Woman's Club of Minneapolis
and at the Minnesota Art
Center in Crystal Bay. Her
work won first prize at the
1984 Minnesota State Fair.
Random House included her
in their book listing the top
350 crafts people in the U.S.

The Polish Counsolate invited
her to spend this coming
summer in Poland doing re-
search and teaching.
Miss .Richie has a varied
background. Besides being
an artist, she has worked in
the Middle East and Israel as
.an archeologist, for the
Catholic Bulletin as a report-
er/photographer, and for 3M
as a commercial translator.
One of the diplomats at the
Polish Counsolate nearly
wept when he saw the ex-
cellence of Katie's art. He told
her that this ancient craft was
dying with old people. It
warmed his heart to see a
young person help preserve
this part of Polish heritage. If
you are interested in learning
this craft, please look for the
class in the Anoka-Hennepin
Community Education spring
brochure.
